My 11 yr. old DD's eyeglass prescription just changed and I'm thinking about getting her the transition lenses. Any opinions? Thanks. :smooth:

My DS, age 14, has had them in his last 2 RXs. He really likes them! :thumbsup2

I wear glasses and I think they look freaky. But to each their own. If your child likes them, go for it.

I have found that the transition lenses do not get as dark as I would like in bright sunlight. This probably would not bother everyone, but I like to wear sunglasses in my car sometimes or if I'm sitting inside by a window and they just don't turn very dark in these situations.

I am going to switch to dark lenses in my current frames that have the transition lenses and get a new pair of regular glasses.

I have had them for two years now, I like them myself. As for them changing while driving, they will not change due to the UV prtection in the vehicle glass.
That's the only downside I can think of.

My DD had them in her last pair of glasses. They really didn't get all that dark. I had them a couple of pairs ago, and that's why I never got them again.

This time, when DD needed new ones (she actually broke the glass in her old ones in gym), we talked about transitions. It was going to be an extra $80, and I talked her into getting a clip on attachment (like I have) instead.

But to be honest, she doesn't like using the clip on. She says she can see the clips and it bothers her. So for right now, she's just going without sunglasses. So if I had it to do again, I'd probably have gotten the transitions for her. I don't like the idea that she doesn't have eye protection given how sunny it is here all the time.

Why not just invest in some prescription sunglasses then?

No offense, but, I can't imagine a teenage wearing clip-ons! The whole idea with them is to look cool! ;) I used to get DS's older RX tinted for sunglasses so if he's happy with the transitions I save the expense of another pair of glasses.

Here is my DS with his transitions. This is indoors so you can't see how dark they get. But they get dark enough to make him happy.

(Never mind his long hair. He got it cut last week! :) )

I've worn glasses for 40 years this year. In that time I have had every kind of lens imaginable. While I agree that the old style of transitions (the photograys) never got dark enough outside or light enough inside, I do have have the new transitions and can't say enough good things about them. In fact, I just bought 3 new pairs of frames that I am going to have transitions put in this week! Although they are not as dark as "real" sunglasses, they offer me a great deal of convenience. I have given up on wearing contacts, as doing that requires that I also have a pair of reading glasses AND sunglasses with me at all times ..... too much hassle. Instead, I just have transitions with progressive lenses (bi-focals) and life is good! Good luck with your choice.

I have had transitions for years and had the same problems others mentioned with most of them. My current glasses are the best I've ever had. They get very dark in the sun and almost perfectly clear indoors. In a car is a different story because the tinted windows block enough of the sun to prevent the glasses from getting dark. Mine have a fitted magnetic dark lens that I keep in the car just for driving. The only problem is remembering to remove them when leaving the car.
