We are so excited to be taking our lo for the first time to WDW. He is ten months old and today the doctor advised us to avoid dairy for two weeks. We leave on Tuesday and stay for 10 nights! For the most part, other than when we dine at buffets, he will be eating off our plates. How easy will this be? Will the chefs/servers easily be able to accommodate us?

Absolutely let the servers know, and they will alert the kitchen. The chef may come out and discuss "safe" menu items for you, or modifications that can be made (if the chef does not, someone else will- could be a manager or server). Even at the buffets, they will go over what is "safe," and they will offer to make you alternate dishes as well. Disney is fantastic about accommodating allergies and dietary restrictions.

Do a little homework yourself. Remember it's not just dairy, but anything made with milk/butter like break, cookies, pancakes, chocolate, cheese. At CS, kiosks and snack shops, the CM is not likely to know if it contains lactose.

The easiest place to eat dairy free is at Disney World. I'm lactose intolerant too and each restaurant (counter service and table service) have menus that list what is okay for each allergy. Some buffets have this too. Some places I have been given a pamphlet that lists what is okay on the buffet and the chef will come by the table and offer to make other things that may not be on the buffet. Don't stress about it. You are headed to the easiest place to eat with dietary restrictions. Don't be shy about asking for ingredient lists or clarification anywhere. Even the carts have binders with info.

You can also note it on your dining reservation ahead of time, which can be helpful to the staff.

Thank you! I will make sensible, informed choices for us and him and try and go with the flow. I think I was a bit overwhelmed by it all earlier but of course I know that Disney World won’t let me down!

It can be very overwhelming. DS had a dairy restriction a few years ago and I couldn't believe how many things have dairy in them- things you wouldn't immediately think of like breads/ flavored chips/ pasta sauces/ chicken nuggets and so on. That just made it even more overwhelming (and I'm sorry if that's what it's doing to you but I had no idea until I really looked at labels/ ingredients and I wish someone had warned me). Definitely let Disney know, and let them steer you to items that are safe. We did better there than we did at our own grocery store!!

This may not help you right now, but if you do find out that he's lactose intolerant, it can be as easy as taking a lactase enzyme before meals. We found out a few months ago that my 7-year-old is lactose intolerant, and those enzymes have changed her life.

My DH is lactose intolerant and also can’t have certain spices. Disney is so great! We mostly eat at TS and the chefs have been so wonderful. We can even have breakfast or dinner at a buffet where a chef will walk him through to tell him what he can have and what to avoid and usually makes things in the back to supplement.. In Nov we stayed at POR and at the food court they made eggs for him special. They would even have made a waffle if he wanted. I see you are staying at AKL. We love Boma for breakfast and dinner. I wold call to get allergy added to your ADRs ASAP.

With the baby only being 10 months old, it should be fairly easy to feed him simple items like vegetables and grilled chicken. It's not like you would have normally fed him chicken nuggets and mac and cheese at such a young age anyway. You will have to order simply prepared foods like steamed vegis and grilled meats, but it is very doable.

As an adult that is lactose intolerant I have found that Disney is super accommodating and most places will have dairy alternatives available for the important things in our adult lives ( coffee and tea - not that you are giving that to a 10 month old but I don't know if you are nursing in which case it would be a factor) I go through Lactaid pills like they are going out of style just as a safety measure for myself but restaurant staff is super helpful if they know there is something that needs to be avoided. Read labels with packaged items because lactose likes to sneak in where you are not expecting it.

Definitely note it on your dining reservations. We took a pescatarian to disney and at most restaurants the chef came out and talked to her, including making her an amazing dish at Ohana after sitting with her and talking about what she liked and didn't like.

Disney restaurants are great in accommodating guests with intolerances and food allergies! Note it on your ADR and mention when you are greeted by your server. Keep in mind avoiding dairy doesn't eliminate being exposed to food that contain lactose like some salad dressings and crackers. I am lactose intolerant and Ive learned the hard way :/ Enjoy your trip.
