I always see everyone saying they got a their transfers through DCL or got a towncar to get to the port. We had transfers through Disney and I just cancelled them because they were $225. and the towncar was $190 for 5 people. We decided to rent a car from airport to port and port to airport on the way home from Budget rental cars. It's only $100. Is this okay to do or did I just make a big mistake?

If you don't mind doing your own driving, then the rental car is the way to go. It is a very easy drive over to the port and having a rental car is the most flexible option. You can set your own schedule and make as many stops along the way as you like. Many people use the DCL transfers or towncars because they are uneasy driving in a strange place or they prefer the convenience that these methods of transportation provide. It is a bit more of a hassle to return the rental car. I am personally opting for a rental car because I want to make a few stops on the way to the port, then I'll be returning the car to Budget while DH and DS check in.

We sailed the Wonder in May and used a car service for two big reasons: 1) it gave us control of our schedule - we went to the park on our day of departure because we had the time and not restricted to a DCL transportation schedule, 2) it was cheaper........

You did the right thing - just make sure the car is large enough to handle everyone’s luggage!!! ( and that is not a joke )
