We have a Sun-Thur trip coming up in May (our first since becoming members). It is significantly cheaper to fly in on Saturday. We are thinking of flying in on Saturday and staying at a value resort and then transferring to SSR the next day.
Is this how it works???

Arrive at airport and take Magical Express to a value resort.

Take bags to front desk the next morning and ask that they be delivered to SSR.

Take the buses to the parks for the day.

Mid-afternoon take a bus to SSR and check in and sometime that day our bags arrive.

That sounds too easy but I know Disney can perform magic. Is that how it works?

pretty much would check in before you go to the parks - but like a choice of rooms.

take your luggage to luggage service not the front desk. value does not have bell services only luggage service.

may sure they understand you want to it transfered to SSR.

yea it is simply.

you may not get your luggage until regular check in time - 4:00pm - so be prepared take everything you will need for that day with you - backpack to the parks. prescriptions, sunscreen, swimming suits, etc - ANYTHING you might need - take it.

We just did a resort transfer in Dec. and it is pretty smooth. Just like you described it, but I would prepare to be w/out your bags for the ENTIRE day. We checked out of our first resort first thing in the a.m. and didn't receive our bags until it was time for our DDs to go to bed. I guess they were having a pretty busy day that day.
Just an F.Y.I....incase you didn't know...you do have to be in your room for them to deliver the luggage. They won't just deliver it to your new room unless you are actually present.

When you say "check in before you go to the parks" how do you do that?

Would I have to take a bus from the value resort to say Epcot and then transfer and take a bus to SSR to check in and then another bus to the park I want to go to for the day or is there a simpler way to do that?

It's been a year since last we did a split stay, but at that time Disney did all intra-resort luggage transfers between 1 and 3...so you for sure can't get your luggage at your new resort until after 1, and possibly until after 3. And yes, they told us we had to be in our room for them to deliver our luggage. However, they were perfectly ok with us going to bell services at our new resort to pick up the luggage ourselves if they were too busy to deliver it at the time we got back and wanted it...

Be prepared to tip at each stage (drop-off at first resort, delivery (even if you pick up yourself) at second...there's no "guidelines" (that I've ever seen) for the amount of the tip, but where we live the standard is $1 to $2 per bag (I usually do $2 if we only have 2-3 bags; $1 if there are a lot of bags...one time we had four people w/2 suitcases each, plus a couple of laptop bags and a bag of groceries...I tipped $10 for that whole "pile")...

It's really very easy and hassle free...at least when you go from DVC to DVC (as we did each time we did it)...I would guess it's just as easy from a value or a mod to a DVC resort, too...

As for check-in at the new resort (SSR)...you can take a bus to Downtown Disney and walk over to SSR, or you can take a bus to any park and then pick up a bus to SSR at that park...or you can take a cab (a cab from SSR to All Star Music last year was $15, including tip)...

if online checkin is in place by then, u could handle it the day before (based upon the early details being accurate); no need to visit the resort unless u need room key w/DP, tix etc. U can call the desk from the park to see if ur room is ready in the afternoon if u like

or, u could call a cab & escort ur bags to SSR early am, then grab bus to park of choice
