Transferring points

I've never been in a transfer transaction before but am thinking of doing one today.
Is it usual to send the money (via PayPal) in full prior to getting on the phone with MS to transfer the points?
It's making me nervous to think about.
Thanks!
ETA - I completed the transaction and all seems to have gone smoothly! :-) Also, while I don't see the points in my account, when I go to plan a vacation, I do see the resort that I got the points from as a home resort (it is not one of mine).

I have not done this with DVC but I've done similar transactions with Marriott Vacation Club points (on both ends of the deal) and if I were on the other side of your transaction I wouldn't do it any other way. A points transfer is irreversible and the owner would have zero recourse if you were to disappear after you get the points.

But before you send money, do your due diligence. If it makes you comfortable, ask for a contract (although it's probably less customary with a points transfer than with a confirmed reservation - I have not used one for point transfers). More importantly, do your due diligence. Talk to the person on the phone to see how knowledgeable they seem about DVC and their ownership. Ask for the person's name and screenshots from their account showing the points and use year match what they represent. Check the country recorder websites to verify that the person owns the points/contracts they say they do. Ask if they have references (some Facebook group has a "recommended owner list"). You also would have little recourse if the person were to disappear so it's better to be safe than sorry - no owner should get offended by any of these things.

I received a transfer recently and yes I agree it was a leap of faith to send all that money before getting on the call with MS for the transfer.

I spent a good amount of time speaking with the owner to get a feel for them before I sent anything. To be honest I think they were equally weary of me to begin with so both parties have to do their due diligence before agreeing to this.

I always required full payment before transferring as once my point were gone, nothing I could do especially since you can’t involve DVC since you can’t technically be paid for transfers.

The usual method that's been followed by members is for the transferor to require payment before the transfer is done. Thus trust is a key to the transaction, particularly since a paid-for transfer is actually an improper act. The DVC POS's specifically prohibit doing any transfers for payment. Thus, if you tell DVC the transfer is for money, it will not be allowed. Moreover, mentioned above is getting a written contract up front. That is likely a pointless activity. Since the transaction is not actually legal because of the POS prohibition, it is unlikely a court would even enforce the contract if something went wrong, but would just leave the parties as they are.

So there's probably not much benefit to choosing G&S option rather than F&F when paying with PayPal, correct?

Another option is use escrow. Com a third party website. You are notified when money rThe money reaches the account you can transfer the points. It is an added expense but can be split among both parties. I did this many years ago. Not sure what the cost is today. Another option once you have a three way call and state to member that you would like to transfer then the money can be sent you before the transfer is done.

OP here - thanks for all of the responses! The transaction went through smoothly yesterday, via PP f/f option. While I don't see the points on my dashboard, I see the resort that the points are from (not one of my home resorts) as a 'home' resort when seeing availability in planning a vacation area, so that is nice. :-)

Do any of you know if there is a place/site where you can trade points with another member? I assume you could transfer the pts to each other in an even trade. My purpose is to be able to book at 11 months for a resort I don't own at.

Answered your question on another thread. But, I don’t know of any that allow this.

One big thing is that even trading could be tough because some resorts are worth more than others.

Best thing is offer your points and then find someone with what you want the finding the same owner.
