Transferring Points

Would someone please direct me to how transferring points work. I have a good friend that just bought 600 points at VGC and she is willing to transfer points to me for some extra vacation we would like to take early next year. How would this work? I guess my questions is more when I get her points, what happens to them? Do they become my points with my use year and booking priviledge? Can I still book 11 months out for BLT if she is transferring VGC points??

Would love some direction on this. Thanks

Transferred points retain their home resort and use year. Transferred VGC points can not be used at 11 months at BLT. Points also have to be transferred into the same working use year, in other words, if you have an October use year, you are in your 2008 use year, if your friend has a March use year, she would be in her 2009 use year. You can't transfer 2009 points to someone that is in their 2008 use year, but if you have an October use year, and your friend has a December use year, you'd both be in the 2008 use year, and she could transfer to you.

It gets complicated.

Thanks Chuck! She also has BWV points so that may help some but was saying she would borrow to transfer. I don't think she can do that, right since they have to be in the same UY. So if I am understanding you correctly we need to transfer points while we are both in the same use year. Once transferred I will have use of her points until the end of her use year? So let say she has a June UY and I have a April. We transferred both with the same UY points. DO I have only until April 1 to use her points as well as mine? Or can I use her points in April and May. Does that make sense??

Banked or borrowed points cannot be transferred. The transferred points must be from that member's current Use Year. But once transferred you may bank those transferred points if they are within the first 8 months of their UY ( although MS has been known to make exceptions to this and may allow the transferred points to be banked even if those points are beyond their banking window).

Concerning the transfer of same UY points into same UY -- I think MS allows for example, your friend's 2009 UY points to be transferred to your 2008 UY IF you use those transferred points for a reservation that will occur in your 2009 UY ( so in the example Chuck gave if your friend has March UY and is now is 2009 UY but you are still in 2008 UY you'd be allowed the transfer her 2009 UY points in but could not utilize the points for a reservation until Oct 1 2009 or later which then is YOUR 2009 UY )

Her points cannot be combined with your points if you have different Home Resorts until 7 month reservation window, but if your HRs are same you may be able to use the points at 11 months HR priority booking window - but afaik, if your UY is April and hers is June and she transfers to you on April 1 2009 (which begins your 2009 UY ) you may not use her June 2009 UY points for a reservation that occurs before June 1 2009 because that is when UY for those transferred points begins; but you could call MS on APril 1 to make the transfer and also for a reservation using both her BWV points transferred to you and your BWV points in order to utilize the HR 11 month booking window for a reservation that would begin on March 1 2010. So no, afaik, her June 2009 UY points cannot be used by you during APril and May 2009 for a reservation that is during those months even though your 2009 UY begins on April 1 2009.

WOW! I have a headache. Ok I think transferring points will be too much of a hassle. Thanks so much for the responses! I think I'll just have her make the reservations for my family! Sounds a lot easier!

LOL !! Yes it's alot to digest, really wish they'd simplify things somehow but I'm not counting on it

You can always call MS and tell them what you've got in mind with the transfers and they'll tell you if it is possible or not; just know that some CMs are better experienced with this & know the ins and outs better than others so if the first CM you speak to sounds unsure you can try another call and see what results you get with another.
