Hi everyone,
I am hoping to pass ROFR soon on my second contract and have a transfer question. My first contract is BWV, August UY. The second is BWV Dec. UY. If I want to pool the points do I have to wait for the points in one contract to be placed in my account before I can transfer? For example, if I want to use all of my points in Jan. of 2012 (hypothetically), I could book this with either one of my contract's points today (April) since both the 2011 points for Aug. UY and Dec. UY would technically be used within their proper UY (We are pretending that I have the Dec. contract in hand and loaded with points). Can I transfer the Aug. UY points into December's for this transaction since the booking would be during the appropriate UY or do I have to bank the points when I get them into one account and wait until the following UY to make the transfer?
Thanks,
Stephen

First, you can not transfer banked points so you do not want to do that.

If you want to be able to combine points from both contracts for a single night, then you will have to transfer between the two.

You can call now and ask that the Aug 2011 UY points be put in the Dec UY contract--you don't have to wait until August 1st to do this (I think this is what you are asking).

They would retain their Aug UY status and would only be valid until July 31st, 2012, unless you bank them after the transfer.

I just did a transfer in to my account from another member that were June 2012 UY points so you would not need to wait.

Thanks for the info.
Does this mean it would make more sense to transfer points from the Dec. UY contract to the Aug one since the points for these remain available/usable later into 2012 (Nov.2012 as opposed to July 2012)?

Unless you have points you'd lose or wouldn't use, I would not transfer at all. The only two advantages to transferring are to combine points for a single night and to use the points together for the 1 week at exactly 11 months. It appears neither applies in this case. I'm assuming your going to either have points you need to use in the Dec, 2011 contract and/or do not have enough points in the current contract. I'd go ahead and book any nights now that you can using your existing contract other than I wouldn't borrow unless you ultimately plan to borrow anyway. Then book the additional nights when you get the new contract squared away and link them.

Hi Dean,
The original question was really hypothetical. I bought the Aug UY contract and then had an opportunity to purchase the Dec UY contract at a great price and loaded with points. My hope is that when we want more points for a larger room or longer stay, I would be able to transfer points from one account into the other and use the combination to rent what we would need. Thereby allowing us to use the points more effectively (some years). I could not find such a great contract with the same UY and I wanted to make sure that transfers within a UY could happen; 1. before we have the points placed in our accounts but during the UY (answered by Sandisw) and 2. if we transfer do we transfer Dec to Aug or Aug to Dec within a UY based on when we are booking.
I also need to justify the value of this second purchase to my DW since the April nights are still verry cold here in Massachusetts and the doghouse is not insulated...

It doesn't matter. When you transfer the points, they retain the same UY and the same booking requirements. It simply means you can combine them with your other points for a single nights stay, as long as the points are valid.

For example, if you transferred Dec 2011 UY points into the Aug UY contract, those Dec 2011 points would still only be valid from Dec 1st, 2011 through Nov 30th, 2012, even though you now have them in your Aug UY contract. It wouldn't allow those Dec UY points to all of a sudden be eligible for stays prior to Dec. 1st, 2011.

As mentioned, however, the only real reason to transfer is so that you can use the points as one big pool and not having to book nights with each contract and then linking them.

For example, if you are booking a Jan 2012 trip, then 2011 points from both contracts would work. If you have enough in each contract to book whole nights, then I would go that way and not even bother with the transfer. However, if you can't book the entire trip this way, and don't want to borrow, then you would need to transfer between the two.

Just remember, everything is based on time of travel. Before doing anything, see if you want book what you want with the contracts as is.

Regardless it's almost always best to make separate reservations and link them rather than transferring.
