Transferring points question...

I am sure this has been covered before, but I need a quick refresher.

I am short on points for a January 2006 trip. I want to book it now, but do not want to borrow points from my 2006 use year in case my plans change. I need 26 points to get all of the nights I want. My use year is August at BWV.

If I find a willing DVC member to make the transaction, how does it work? I realize it starts with me paying the going rental rate, and the other member transferring the points to my account. But, what if I need to cancel my trip more than 31 days out? What happens to those points? Can they be banked like my regular August use year points?

Thanks in advance for the help.

According to the information I have in an old guidebook, "transferred points retain the use year of the transferring member". Darned if I know what that means! Is the transferring member the one getting or the one giving the points? My guess is the points are the use year of the person you got them from, so that would determin if you could bank them or not.

1. you own BWV points and you want to book now, 11 months out for ressies at BWV, you have to find a member that is willing to transfer you BWV points.

2. make sure the points will not expire before your ressies.

3. make sure the points get transfer into you right use year.

4. the points are yours, if you cancel they will be return into your account and are good for your next ressies as long as they dont expire before you make your next ressies( this is only if you cancel 31 days before arrival)

5. after 31 one days, the points are still your but go into a holding account along with any other points you used.

6. yes these points can be banked, but by theie original banking time frame.

7. these points that you rent will remain its original status, make you write the info down, example: BWV points use year aug. 2005. points must be banked by feb. 28, 2006(then you will not get the points back to use until aug. 1, 2006 and expire july 31,2007) you can make ressies before aug. 1, 2006 but the ressies arrival date must be after aug.1, 2006, the points remain as BWV points & expire july 31, 2006.

;)

to all for the information. It is clear as mudd. :) (Said with humor!) But really, I think I understand....I will see if I can find someone with some August 2005 use year points who is willing and able to transfer points for the going rate. I don't see me cancelling any Disney vacation, but I just had to cancel a trip to Washington DC because my daughter got ill at the last minute (we were supposed to leave today in fact) and could not travel. So I want to make sure I can still somehow use the points - even if they went into holding.

I asked MS about a cash reservation, and it would be about $330 for the Saturday night that I need/want, so it looks like renting some extra points would be a much better financial option. Or gee... maybe I could do a quick add-on if some points are available! :) Not sure my hubby would appreciate that right now though.

Ok, I have a quick question regarding the transfers. The above information is great and so is the link. Thanks for all of that.

Here is my situation. I am trying to plan a trip to WDW for next March. I have 3 families going including my own, so we want to book a Grand Villa. My home resort is SSR, but the points required for the grand villas there is astronomical. I would like to book a grand villa at OKW, but have to wait until the 7 month window. I am worried there won't be any available at that window. I have the points for an OKW grand villa, but they are for SSR right now. So here is the question;

Can I transfer/trade points with someone so that I can book the OKW grand villa now? If I am transfering is it essential giving someone with OKW home resort 200 of my points for 200 of theirs?

When I did a point transfer the points (although they are not SUPPOSED to) became my use year at my home resort. Unless they fixed it, there is glitch in the system that seems to almost always cause that to happen. Besides my experience with this happening, it's been reported repeatedly here in many a post that this nearly always occurs.

So, although there is no guarantee, if you get the points you need for the GV from an OKW member theoretically, unless they somehow fixed the glitch, the points will end up in your account with your use year and your home resort. I've been told by MS that in order for this NOT to happen the CM doing the transfer has to do it manually. So be careful, if you find someone to transfer with be sure you tell the CM doing the transfer that you want the points to remain OKW points, not "convert" to SSR points. And be careful of the use year in the same way.

To answer your question--NO you're not Trading points, you're Transferring them. You keep all your points, the person who transfers the 200 points you need gets whatever money you agree on, but none of your points.

BUT, (and I hate to be the voice of doom and gloom here), since the 11 month booking window for March was last month there may already be no GVs left at OKW. Since the points are so low for GVs at OKW they go fast. Have you checked with MS for availability? Have you considered getting each family a one bedroom at SSR instead of the GV at OKW? (personally I think I'd go a little nuts sharing even a GV with 3 other families, but that's just me, LOL).

I hope it works out for you, good luck!

Just wanted to let you know that I found a DVC member with BWV points. We were able to work out a transaction and everything worked out just fine. (thanks tor!!) I now have my full 7 nights at BWV for January 2006 - guaranteed Boardwalk view. Yippee! :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

Glad it worked out for you, have a great trip! BTW I'll be at BWV in January too, from 1/23-1/27, maybe we'll be neighbors. :goodvibes

Sorry we won't meet. We will be there from January 7 to January 14, 2006. Funny... I may still add another night. Heck, as long as I am flying from Wisconsin, I might as well stay until Sunday, right? Plus, we will most likely get annual passes again, so I love getting my money's worth out of those!

Have a great weekend. I am happy just knowing I get to plan another trip.

ryanmilla you would have to find a member that owns at okw and have them transfer the points into your account, you make the ressies if the okw GV are available, i suggest to check with ms first to see if there is any GV. then you would either have to rent your points out and pay cash for the 200 points or have an agreement with the member that owns at okw that you will make their next ressies using your 200 points. you can only transfer "in" OR "out" per use year. you cannot do both in the same use year. good luck :sunny:
