Besides finding someone who is willing............what do I need to know/do?

Thanks.

  1. points transfers are irrevocable once processed
  2. you and the transferor must both be current on your dues/mortgage payments to perform the transfer
  3. you can only accept incoming points if you have not done any outgoing transfers during the same use year
  4. if you qualify to accept incoming transfers, then you are allowed to accept as many incoming transfers as you want during that same use year (this is an unwritten rule, was recently changed but not published yet)
  5. you can bank the points if you want, once they're in your account
  6. you cannot borrow transferred points though
  7. the transferor can only transfer "virgin" points to you (i.e. not banked or borrowed points). holding account points that are "virgin" can also be transferred
  8. the written rule is that transferred points retain their original Home Resort and Use Year properties
  9. Member Services' computer system cannot handle those written rules. you may need to ask a CM to do a manual override of the system, if Home Resort and Use Year of the points is important to you
  10. if your Use Year isn't the same as the Transferor's Use Year, you must choose which Use Year you want to transfer IN to. i.e. if you have an April UY, and the Transferor has points to transfer to you from his Oct 2003 UY, you can choose to receive the transfer into your April 2003 UY, or you April 2004 UY.
MS's computer system may limit your use of these points as a result.
if you choose April 2003, you can use points from 10/03 - 3/04. if you choose April 2004, you can use points from 4/04 - 9/04.
  11. the transaction can be requested over the phone w/ MS, but must be confirmed in writing by email or fax
these are just the ones i can remember off the top of my head. if i think of any more, i'll post again. let me know if you would like clarification of any of these points. #9 and #10 can be especially confusing.
good luck!

I have an October Use year(VB) and may need 5 points to complete a ressie for VB for April 2004 (using 2003 points and borrowed 2004 points). So, if I find a person who is willing to do this, then will I have to give them my name and member number to make the transaction work? Would that person then make the call? And, what use year points would they need to transfer to me........2003?

I wanted to make sure I understand this before I advertise that I need points. I also need to call MS to make sure what I want is still available. I have 11 month window now.......really should've done this a few weeks ago. I have never transferred in or out.

Another limitation is that one can only transfer points from thier current use year. In other words, you cannot transfer points from a future use year.

Example: My use year is Oct. I cannot transfer Oct03-Sep04 points until Oct 1. I may transfer Oct02-Sep03 points, which could be banked by the recipient.

Just last week we transferred points from our coming Sept. 03 use year to another DVC member for use in March 04. We've used all our current use year points, so MS couldn't have taken them from current year. All we did was email MS with the details, and they emailed back wanting to know what use year the recipient wanted them put into. It was very easy!

By the way, we have points available still @ $10/point. If you want to arrange a transfer, please email us via the button below (mholley@texoma.net).

Just to clarify - it can not be in and out with the same member but you can do in and out with different members.

actually, MS informed me that they can perform transfers in your current use year AND in your next use year.
for example, Tom, right now you should be able to transfer Oct02 and Oct03 points.
when 10/1/03 comes around, you will be able to transfer Oct03 and Oct04 points.

Sandy... wow, really? that's a new one. actually i think you mentioned this before, but for some reason i never understood what you meant until now. :p so, have you actually done this? (accept incoming points from one Member, and then transfer points out to a different Member) ?
just 'cause i'm thinking most MS agents wouldn't agree to it, and would hold to the incoming only or outgoing only restriction.
do you remember who you spoke to at MS who confirmed that in + out in one use year is okay as long as different members?

I did do it. As I was short points and bought from a few members, that I had a family member cancel (no longer needed the extra studio). I saw a post for someone 5 points short and helped out by transfering. I have e-mails from Larry, Todd and Evelyn confirming. I perfer transfers via e-mail so there is a paper trail, I than call as a follow-up with a few weeks.

You don't actually need to fax or e-mail a confirmation - I transferred points to 3 different other accounts at 4 different times. Each time I called, the MS person did it while I waited on the phone, then gave me the transaction number and I let the transferees know the number. And I didn't even know the account number of any of the transferees - we found them by a combination of name and state (luckily I knew that much!).

However, call back and verify afterwards - on the first transfer, someone screwed up and transferred the same number of points 3 times.

Hi, all.

After an extensive conversation with MS today, I believe I have the explanation that will cover all the examples that have been listed here.

You cannot transfer future use year points. Instead, what occurs is a reallocation so that the end result is the same as if you had.

For example, in TexasAggie's case, what probably occurred is that the points were borrowed from next use year and allocated to the current year reservations (freeing up current year points). The current year points were then transferred to the recipient. The MS rep indicated that the a point activity statement would probably show these transactions that were "transparent" to the member--the end result being a processed transfer and a decrease in next use year's point total.

This same scenario would support the examples posted by disneyberry. What would be really interesting to see would be if someone used all their current year points at the beginning of their use year (trip complete, points expended...not just planned with points allocated) and then tried to "transfer next year's points." My guess would be that it could not be done, because the points could be borrowed, but would not free up any current year points to effect the transfer.

I also obtained an explanation that addressed the transfer direction issue. You CAN send and receive points in a given use year. Here is the rule: If you have multiple transactions in a given direction, you can only execute one transfer in the other direction. In other words: you can send once, receive many or receive once, send many. Of course, send once receive once does not break this rule.

I have transferred out twice this year, I can make one transfer in and as many more as I want out.

TexasAggie, disneyberry...let me know if you can contradict these explanations!

Sincerely,

tkmcw
