My husband and I have been enjoying DVC with friends over the years which lead to us finally becoming members @ SSR last year.

We have rented points in the past (and in all fairness - there was no problem) but I always had a fear that the owner of the points could cancel the reservation on us. Upon becoming DVC members we were interested in knowing more about how it works to transfer points between members.

What is the best way to do a transfer and assure payment to the member who is transferring the points?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank You,
Janine

The best way IMHO is Pay Pal which some people have set up to pay for transferred or rented points. But if renting makes you nervous will turning your actual DVC account number over to a total stranger (which you will have to do to have points transferred into your account) make you any less nervous?

I honestly feel safer with renting points and I have been a renter and a rentee as well as someone who has had points transferred into my account.

I did once and asked for payment if full before transferring them. I think other have asked for half and then transfer half and so on, that takes to many calls. If you own the points you are in control, but that means the other have to trust you also. I make sure I give them my address and phone number so they can get in contact with me. Plus, with giving them that information they do not think you are trying to mess with them. Mine was only 100 points so it wasn't that much money. Tranferring the points to the account is easy. Try and do everthing by email or regular mail, that way both parties have a paper trail. one thing to look out for is you can only transfer point in one direction per year. You can not transfer points to someone and then have someone else transfer points to you. I hope this makes sense, beacause I know it is not very organized.

Thanks HBC - - my husband said the same. I guess either way there is a certain "trust factor" between DVC members that you hope is upheld.

The DVC member I am speaking with actually didn't want to know my member number at all (which I was willing to provide for the transfer).

Good to know that you would rather rent than transfer - I will take that into great consideration - - thanks again! :)

im going to go out on a limb here, i would say you can trust about every dvc member here on this disboard, there has been great feedback from these dvc members with transactions on the rent/trade board. i would all these dvc members are disney fans and wouldnt cheat another dvc member.

you also have to look on the other side of the fence, the dvc member that is renting to you can lose just as much as you can, its all about trust and if you cant trust another dvc member, then i suggest borrowing your own points or family and friends points, if it makes you feel more comfortable.

what would happen if a dvc member made your ressies and you decide within the 30 days to cancel and the member then gets stuck with points in a holding account, or you trash the room and the member gets billed , i understand your concerns, i just rented points from three different members and i had to send the cash before the transfer and we are talking thousands of dollars, and i trusted each dvc member and didnt have any problems.

its ala about the friendship, love and trust we all share on the dvc members disboard .

so dont worry, just trust::yes::

Thanks Tod - - I definitely don't want to make this more difficult for us or the renter. I have provided all my personal info already. I want them to feel as comfortable as possible with this transaction. I did offer the 1/2 & 1/2 option. If they are comfortable with that then great. However, after getting the bit of advice from you guys here, I will let them know that renting is fine with us as well.

THANKS AGAIN - - :)

Thanks WDWStar - - I have made up my mind to let the renter know that is is fine to keep it simple and rent instead of going with the transfer. I tend to agree and don't think that a DVC member would cheat another.

I appreciate your great advice - - thanks again! :)

The only time I would be concerned is if I were doing business with someone new to the boards here. I don't think someone is going to spend many many hours posting here, just so they can scam someone.

When I rented $900 of points recently, I gave the seller my eBay ID (I have 500+ positives, no negatives) as a reference.

If you are really concerned, there are online escrow services that can handle the deal for you, for a fee of maybe $50 or so.
