Transferring points...banking, borrowing ??

I have asked MS but I don't think I understood (or if they fully understood!)...so I thought I would ask our experts :teeth:

We borrowed points from out '03 (August) use year for a June trip...we didn't have enought to upgrade our room so we borrowed some from a friend (ie transferred into our account) who let us have some of her '03 points (June). Here is my situation -

We are booked in a 1 Bdrm at VWL but would prefer a 1 Bdrm Standard View at BW (we are not fond of the Preferred View rooms - nothing to do with points). I had asked MS what would happen to the 30 points difference if we got the waitlist for BW...and was told they could go back into the account.

Can anyone clarify what that actually means. Would it got to my account as '03 points, would it go back to our friends account, would it actually be banked or would they be put into holding. This is the first time we may encounter this and I guess I'm totally confused - of course the waitlist may not come through so it could be a non-issue anyway.

Thanks for any help....

The points would go back into your current use year account. They would not go back to your friend, borrowed points would not go back to their original use year.

You need to be careful here. If your waitlist does come through, it may be too late in your use year to do anything with those 30 points.

i believe this is what would happen:

if your Std-View waitlist at BWV comes through this month, but at least 31 days before your June check-in date, then those 30 points from your friend would be restored back to your account.

if they are restored back to your account, then those points retain your friend's June Use Year properties, so they are valid from 6/1/03 - 5/31/04.
you could then also bank those 30 points from this year to next year, as long as you follow the banking schedule of a June Use Year.

however, if you decide to remain on the Std-View BWV waitlist after the 31 day window (remember you must call MS to request to remain on the waitlist), and then the waitlist does comes through...
those 30 points would go back to your account, but would be put into a holding account.
you would have 1 year to use up those points again though: 6/1/03 - 5/31/04.
but, as you know, you'll only be able to book last-minute ressies w/ those holding account points.

hope this makes sense.

btw, you should definitely instruct MS that you want to use up all your borrowed points first.
so, if 30 pts are freed up if you get your waitlist, those 30 pts should come from the points your friend transferred to you.

If you have at least 30 points that are either current use year (Aug, 2002) or 30 June 03 points from your friend, you could free those up and either use them later, bank them or use them. Subject to the other rules of course. Even if you can't bank them, you could use the 30 points from your friend later as they don't expire until next year (hopefully) if DVC did things right. Talk with MS again.

Thanks for your input!! So I get this right, and this is what I thought MS was saying too, but I was totally be-fuddled speaking with them:tongue:

IF our waitlist comes through, our friends points would go back to our account and we could bank them with their use year (June '03) ..here is another question (ha, ha)...are they now Boardwalk points (our resort) or are they OKW points (our friends resort)?? I thought MS said they would become BW points, but I don't get that!!

I can't take the pressure...to much information to digest!! I think I need to go to bed it's been a long week!

Have a great night!

Transferred points will always retain their original Home Resort status. In this case they will remain OKW points and may be used only at OKW at 11 months.

ok, this is something which i get frustrated with MS about.

the points you got from your friend should stay OKW points.
i assume you do not own any OKW points, right?

well, i believe MS gets confused in situations like this.
if they transfer some OKW points into a BWV account, i think their computer system can't handle that, so what happens is it looks like those OKW points become BWV points.

BUT, according to the legal definitions/rules outlined in our Public Offering Statements, they are supposed to retain their original home resort properties: i.e. they are supposed to remain OKW points.

so, i think it depends on how knowledgeable the MS agent you speak to is.
some will probably be able to figure out that those points are supposed to be OKW points.
other MS agents will be confused, and think they are BWV points.

as i said, this really frustrates me.
transferring points is such a complicated thing, it's so hard to actually talk to MS on the phone about it. what makes it worse is how MS's computer system wasn't built to handle transferring points according to the rules that DVD set up.

ok, sorry for the rant.
anyway, i hope you'll be able to sort things out if your waitlist comes through.

Thanks again for your input. I had thought the points would (should) retain their home resort origin. But, when I spoke with MS they said they would become BW points - which is why I posted here. We seem to know so much more sometimes!!!

I guess I'll just wait and see if the waitlist does come through. Of course now I'm wondering if I should be adventurous and stay somewhere different on this trip and just keep the ressie at VWL. Thanks again. Have a great night everyone!
