Can anyone suggest a good software/ stand alone product to do this? Stand alone product that plays VHS and plugs into computer to convert to DVD or otherwise? Thanks in advance!!!

I have never seen a vhs player to usb or firewire.

have to go the RCA plug route, or let me know. I have some to archive also.

Another option would be to pick up a cheap DVD recorder and record them directly from VHS onto DVD. You could then load the files onto the computer from the DVD and edit them that way. I think you can get a DVD recorder for a little over $100 and they make for a nice replacement for a VCR.

I have a JVC stand alone that is VCR & DVD and it converts them. ran about $400 ill look it up and post the specs for ya if your intrested.

I have a Panasonic DVD recorder that not only converts VHS to DVD, but records directly from my TV to DVD. They have dropped in price since I bought mine, and I highly recomend the brand; it's very intuitive.

Standalone DVD recorders can be had for under $100 nowadays, and have the inputs to record directly from VCR. You can record to a rewritable DVD then use your computer to import the contents, edit them, and re-author a new DVD, with a proper menu and so on. Erase the original rewritable DVD and start over.
