I have had to cancel my DVC stay, after paying my $1000 deposit to the DVC owner. They are very understanding (and we are working together to resolve) and would like to help me not lose the deposit. Question is, what are the solutions? We have ** months, so there is sufficient time to cancel and it is for a **...do we just repost the points on here (and cancel the reservation) or is there an appropriate palce to just transfer the current res to another family???

thanks!

The owner cannot offer a booked reservation for rent unless is it within 30 days of the reservation date, here on the DIS.

But they should be able to get the points back into their account and offer to book a new reservation for someone else.

You should really have nothing to do it with it at all, although I understand your vested interest in getting your $$ back.

You, the OP, have no options since you don't own the points.

The best you can do is find another person that you already know who might want the reservation. Since you are not the member, you cannot post points for rent or a reservation for rent. Only the member can do that.

And if they don't know what to do, they either take the deposit you gave them, leaving you with the reservation in your name only, or they use it themselves and still keep your deposit. An existing reservation cannot be posted on the DIS until 30 days out or the time frame when the points go into holding. The member should already know that.

It all depends on what your contract with them stated.

Im just trying to discover details to help out the process. If I lose the money, so be it....it"s my fault. Sounds like best option is to cancel, they keep deposit. Then they just post the points for rent, if they rent the points...then I can get my deposit back.

(U say I shouldnt be involved, but yes I should, if they need to make the money off the points in full then I can obviously try and help them out to make those dollars...if it helps me get back a portion of the deposit, then lucky me. There are still good people in the world ;)....they just cant keep their reservations as planned! ughhhh

But you can't post the reservation for rent because you don't own it. You can't promise it to anyone else because you don't own it. You can't make an agreement with another person to rent the reservation because you don't own it. If the member chooses not to do anything or doesn't know what to do (and I find that hard to believe), you are out your deposit.

If you read any of the threads about renting a DVC reservation, they pretty much all say to consider it a done deal with no changes possible.

The DVC Owner may post a points for rent thread here on the DIS Rent/Trade Board. Under our board rules, we do require that the person posting is the owner of the points, and no existing reservation more than 30 days from check-in. Other sites may allow them to post the existing reservation, ebay and craigslist may also be an option.

I agree that the best you can do, as the renter, is to simply try to find someone among your friends and family that may want the reservation, but most boards would prefer that the owner be the one posting the points or reservation, as you would simply be another step, or middle man, between the next potential renter and the owner, and the contract would need to be between the owner and the next renter.

Thanks Chuck, I am just trying to be helpful to my family and the DVC members. Bottom line is they repost the points and do a new deal with a new renter....shouldnt be that difficult....but who knows. Thanks!!!

The owners may find info helpful to help them decide how they want to handle this, in particular they should read stickies atop the Rent/Trade board here or maybe they'd prefer to deal with a service that handles renting points like dvcrequest which advertises here on the DIS but that does require them to list them as an associate on their membership until dvcrequest makes the reservation using those points.

Good luck :)

As far as I know, that associate thing is not true any longer since DVC changed the rules on associates. David now acts as a broker/match-maker and the owner makes the reservation, I believe. I'm sure that's an oversimplified description, but I do not believe he is added as an associate any longer.

That is my understandig as well. The whole associate thing would have been a deal breaker for me anyway, if I were looking to rent out points.

Thanks for posting this info, I didn't know this had changed.

:)
