Transfer Question

I read through the Transfer Rules 101 and have a question... the rules outline one transfer per membership, either as a transferee or transferor, during a given use year. I have multiple contracts under the same membership. Does this rule mean that points from each contract can be transferred once per use year? So I can combine points from more than 1 contract for the transfer? Or am I limited to transferring points from only contract since they are all under the same membership? Thank you!

You can transfer points from whatever contracts you own in a single transaction to one other member.

So, if you want to to transfer some for each, you can, but it can only go to the same owner. You could not transfers some to one person and some to another, even if it was at the same time.

Basically, one single transaction in or out.

Where would I find this “Transfer rules 101”? I’m in the process of purchasing my first addt’l contract outside of BWV in over 20 years & want to make sure I understand the process before committing. Also if I add my son’s name onto the new contract (along with me), I understand it will create a separate member number. Does that have any impact on transfer rules? TIA!

The rules for transfer are in the home resort rules and regulations document on the website. Currently, the rule is one transfer in or out of your membership. However, DVC seems to have changed the policy to allow members who are on more than one membership to transfer more than once when it is between ones they own. It is not written anywhere that this is allowed so it could always change.

Based on the current rules, you should have no problem transferring between an account owned with you and your son and one without him. This just happened the other day. CM transferred points from my Dec UY which is just owned by DH and I to my August UY that is also owned with our three adult children. In addition, these points were banked, but she did say they will even transfer banked points when its the same owner!!!

This was the first time for that for me...granted it was only 3 points but I hate to waste any points!!! LOL

This is terrific information, thanks so much! I was just about to go look on the DVC site so thanks for pointing me in the right direction. We really are a “BWV family”, but with our sons in their early 30s I’m envisioning more trips without them and personally would really enjoy some split stays at VGF, with extended family, girlfriends, and maybe grandchildren someday. Not to mention the additional 20 years on the VGF contract.

The thought of juggling two different memberships (if I do decide to add my sons onto the new contract) is stressing me out a bit however as I’m used to my routine with my BWV points 😊. I understand in that case you can link both memberships to your Dashboard, correct? Have you found that to be difficult to manage?

I think I’ve now veered off topic for this thread, but thanks again!

As to having two membership numbers on the same dashboard, the answer is yes if the two memberships have different use years but the same owners. If the two memberships have any differing owners, as would be the case if you purchased another DVC contract that also puts children on the deed, then, regardless of whether they have the same or different use years, the online accounts will be separate.

Regardless of whether the new membership is, or is not, on the the same dashboard, the rules for using the two memberships are essentially the same. In making a single reservation, you cannot mix points from one membership with another unless you first transfer points from one membership to the other. If you want to use both memberships for one continuous stay in the same room, you either need to first do a transfer or separately make two reservations, using one membership to reserve part of the nights and the other membership to reserve any remaining nights and then request MS to link the two separate reservations, which will avoid having to change rooms. If you go the route of doing two separate reservations, each reservation is subject to its own 11-month or 7-month out date when making it.

Having two memberships adds some work to assure you keep track of both, and each will have its own bills for annual dues. There are also some advantages to having separate memberships, e.g. (a) since they are separate memberships, the single transfer rules apply separately to each and thus you can make two separate transfers to other members; (b) if you make two trips (or more) per year, you can buy separate use years that combined avoid the cancellation issue for banking points, e.g., have a December use year for trips from Dec to May and a June use year to use for trips from June to Nov; thus, if you need to cancel a reservation you will necessarily be within the 8-month banking window as long as you cancel more than 30 days from arrival date.

I have one membership (A) that is titled differently than the other 3 (B,C D) memberships. All 4 memberships appear under one login for me. But my daughter, who is on A, can only see A when she logs in on her account.

I don't find it any more difficult to manage A than the other 3. It just takes planning as to when points from each membership will be used. I've transferred points between memberships when I want to spend more points without borrowing and it's never been a problem other than the wait when calling MS.

All of my contracts show up on my dashboard. My Aug UY is there and that is owned with DH and my three adult kids.

My June and Dec UY is just DH and myself. One log on and I just toggle between them all.

The kids, of course, only see the Aug UY

So, if I have two contracts, XXXX.1 and XXXX.2 (different resorts, same UY) under a single membetship, can I transfer points from XXXX.1 to another member, and then later transfer points from XXXX.2 into XXXX.1 within the same UY?

No. You get one transfer - in or out - per membership, not per contract.

You don't ever transfer between XXXX.1 and XXXX.2 with the same UY. It's not possible or necessary. It would not accomplish anything - the points would not change home resorts.

Thanks for the clarification--this is all new to me.

You can combine them to book any resort at 7 months out. You simply select all of the contracts that you want to use during the reservation process and the system will do what it needs to do automatically. It's one of the few things that works well on the website.

Okay, just wanted to make sure that a combination of points between contracts for a booking wasn't considered a "transfer" between them that would trigger the 1-transfer-per-UY limitation.

Follow-up question to all this clarification. If I'm able to transfer between my 2 use years. Can I also do one transfer in from another member?

So i was just about to ask this question. I need 9 points from my AKV contract to book a room that I want at BLT due to the 50% borrowing rule since I actually would have enough BLT points if it weren’t for the restriction. My AKV and BLT contracts are the same member number and use year so does this mean I can’t transfer those 9 points to the BLT contract to book the room at 11 month?

The AKV points wouldnt suddenly become BLT home points to be used at 11 months even if you did.

Correct. Even if you could transfer between contracts in the same membership (you can't, no need to do so for 7 month bookings), you cannot use non-home resort points to book during the priority booking period. You only option to use the 11 month window is to call MS and ask for an exception to the borrowing limit. Hope that works out for you.

Thank y’all! I’ll just have to hope that they’ll make an exception for me to borrow 9 points above the 50%. I’ll have a back-up plan just in case, or be prepared to waitlist at seven months for the one night that I won’t be able to book.
