So...if I buy enoough points for every other year but run short for any given vacation, can I rent or transfer a few points from the rent/transfer board or elsewhere to fill in the gap? Ie: I have 150 per year, bank 150 + use 150, need 320 to take a particluar one week vacation at SSR-- can I rent or transfer the extra 20 point difference?

Thanks!

If you wanted to rent, you would have to ask another member to book you whole nights and then have that reservation linked to your reservation.

You could also secure a transfer but with one transfer allowed per UY in or out, it may be tough finding someone to transfer so little points. You could always secure a transfer for more than you need and just make use of them for a few years by using them first and banking your own.

The last option, if booking at 7 months, is to now buy up to 24 points per UY to complete a reservation in lieu of having to borrow points. They are $15/ppt.

Am confused. You have 3 years of effective points to use. So if you have 150 points, and you have not used it, you have a total of 450 points (150 in the bank, 150 current UY, 150 you can borrow).

So if you need 320. You can just borrow the 20 points from the next UY. No need to rent or transfer. What did I miss?

If they bought only enough for every other year thy cant borrow from year three because that puts them short in vacation year "4".

Right, and that's when an add on is needed. ;) We bought 230 to begin with, and quickly discovered it wasn't enough, so we purchased an additional 150 point contract. Of course the best laid plans can also go awry. We bought 69 AKV points with the intent of using 3 years at a time. Then the point schedule changed and messed us up!

I was, in theory, just trying to buy enough points for every other year. I can picture us going that often-- not every year. We take a big vacation about once per year and forsee us going somewhere other than WDW on the off year. So borrowing from the third year would not be ideal. I was just wondering what the other options are. It would seem if you could rent or transfer "extra" points needed or owned, it would be a win win for everyone involved. If it is not really possible, I guess I would look to getting about 20 more points just to act as a cushion. But I didn't want to waste them either. Is transfering the same as renting but just member to member?

Sort of. The big plus with transferring is that you have control of the reservations you make. With renting, the person who rents you the points still has the ability to change or cancel your reservation.

Also with a transfer, if your plans change last minute, they are still your points even if they were to go into holding. With renting, most people who rent are going to want you to absorb the loss if the vacation has to be cancelled and the points become distressed.

Another option is that you can rent a few extra points from Disney when you reserve at 7 months or less out. They charge $15 a point. I'll be using that option for 2 points when the 7 month window comes up on my December AKV trip. Even using 3 years of points, I still need 2 more since the point allocation.

If you absolutely will not be using them more than every other year, then it's better to have too few and borrow, than too many and waste them. In your example, you borrow 20 points in year 2. Then you borrow 40 points in year 4. Then you borrow 60 points in year 6. You're in year 14 before you're out of borrowed points. Then you skip a year, or add on. (Alternatively, earlier on, you cut a day from your trip and you're back to even.). All this assumes your point needs and plans never change, which is unlikely

On the other hand, if you buy 160 and only need 300 for your trip in year 2, you have 20 points left that you cannot use in year 4.

Hope I explained that properly.

I'm with maburke. I get it that you're allocating that for future plans. But I would rather borrow from my unknown future than add-on/rent/transfer now.

I would only rent or transfer or buy if I absolutely have no more points to borrow.

To answer your question though, it IS possible to do any of those you mentioned. Transfer is better than rent if it's just 20 points. Or you can buy from Disney at the time you make your reservation @ $15/pt. I think it's up to 24 points.

Also keep in mind that a small point transfer is not necessarily a good deal for someone who is trying to rent a couple of hundred points and you may find it difficult to find someone willing to transfer only 20 pts. The reason why is because you only get one transfer for each use year, either into or out of, and it's much preferred to actually transfer a couple of hundred with that one allotted transfer.

I too think that marbruke has the right idea. Keeping borrowing throughout the years until you run out and then rent/transfer a couple of hundred and then borrow again for the next years. Wash, Rinse, Repeat...

See, I had never even thought of all that! I was so focused on having the correct amount of points (or trying to given that points and plans change) that I didn't really consider borrowing from the third year. If all the resorts required the same amount of points for the same size unit at the same time of year it would make it much simpler in my head! Thanks for the fantastic advice!
