Hello all!

We are relatively new DVC members and I have a question. How do point transfers work, and are they/will they be difficult to find. We are trying to plan an extended family vacation for 2013 and thought that having points transferred to us would be easier, so we could be in charge of making reservations for everyone.

Any advice, help, answers are much appreciated!

I've done it once...relatively straightforward.

1) I found someone on these boards looking to transfer points
2) We agreed on terms in e-mail.
3) I believe I paid 50% before we did transaction, 50% after - I think we did this via PayPal
3) We called Member services together (i.e., 3-way) for the transaction.

There is obviously some risk to both parties. I believe there is a once a year limit on transfers and there are some details on where these land from a use year perspective that I can't recall.

Hi! We just purchased in to DVC last June, and we are taking my family (18 of us) this summer for a WDW vacation. I wanted to make sure I had plenty of points for what we were wanting as far as villa size, so I began watching the Rent/Trade forum. I found someone who had around the number of points I was wanting at the home resort I was wanting, and it was a painless process.:goodvibes I did have to pay via Paypal prior to the other member transferring the points to my account, and we didn't do a 3 way call, but he was very prompt in emailing me through each step. The points were in my account within an hour or so of me paying him. I will tell you that they do not show on the member site. I made a note of exactly what I had transferred in, UY, etc., and I had no problem using them.

I agree that there probably has to be some trust on both sides, and I may have been way more trusting than I should have been, but I went through some of my renter's previous posts on the DIS and found where he had rented in the past though not that often. I felt completely safe, and I'd do it again if I needed the points. Just make sure that you get points for the resort you want to stay at if you're wanting the 11 month booking advantage. Good luck!

Actually, the easiest way to handle this is to let the other family members make their own reservations. That way you aren't stuck holding that expensive bag.

Thank you so much for your response. What if the resort we are looking to stay is not our home resort? Do the points transferred, become points of "our" home resort or the home resort of the person transferring them?

Transferred points will retain their original Home Resort status and Use Year even after the transfer so they may be used for reservations 11 months ahead at the resort they represent even if different than your own Home Resort.

Enjoy! :)
