WE have a bunch of old cassette type home movies and would love to put them on dvd. What is the easiest? A service like Walgreens? Something to buy so I can do it myself?

IMO, the "easiest" is to let someone else do it. ;) My sister used (I think) WalMart to transfer old home movies to DVD, but they probably do tapes also.

DH bought some computer program that I can use to transfer my old VHS tapes to digital and burn them onto DVDs, but I don't really care for doing it. Depending on how compatible your video player is with your computer makes a difference. Our isn't real compatible. :(

We bought a machine and did it ourself. It is a Sony device. We had a ton of old tapes from older Camcorders. This machine will transfer to a DVD as long as you still have the old camcorder that the tapes fit in as it is transferred from that to the DVD. We had tons of tapes so this was a no brainer for us. Machine cost about $200 ( I know Best Buy used to have this).

Now I have a Camcorder that uses a Memory Stick and to transfer those to DVD's we just have to put the Memory Stick in the machine. Very easy. We also make DVD's of all our pictures also. We have gotten our money's worth on this machine. Especially since all the video of when our kids were little are now preserved.

I bought a machine for about $100-150 and did them myself. It's handy to have around, I've been able to help out some friends which was nice.

I think it depends on how many tapes you have. If it's only a few, I'd probably just pay a service -- but if it's a fair amount i think it'd be cheaper to buy the machine.

I'd start a VHS tape converting and then just flip over to my TV and continue on with whatever I'm doing and just come back to check on it and finalize the disk later. The VHS tape goes in one side, blank DVD in the other, and as long as the tape has no copyright protection it's an easy process.

This is what my parents did. They had probably hundreds of old home movie tapes that they are in the process of transferring to dvds.
