We are looking at buying DVC, but I was wondering if anyone knows if I can transfer my contract to a friend in a will without them losing all of the privileges with buying direct from DVC. We don't have children and if something were to happen I would hate for anyone to lose those abilities if they treat it as a resale, but my husband and I don't want to put anyone else on our deed either.

As long as it is not a gratuitous transfer then your heirs should retain all the rights and privileges of a DVC contract that was purchased direct.

I would confirm this with DVC and ask for a reply in writing to be double safe though.

Just try to remember, though, that when you buy DVC, the ONLY thing you are truly guaranteed is the right to book at your home resort. As long as the resort remains part of the "club", trading to other DVC villas is also part of it--but, they have the right--although unlikely--to remove any resort and if that ever happened, the home resort stays would be it.

Everything else is simply a perk of the current program and can be changed or modified in the future, regardless of how you buy now.

IMO, buy DVC for stays at your DVC home resort and try not to worry about the rest because its all subject to change if they want it to change.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info! The rep we spoke with hadn't given us a "warm and fuzzy" feeling and we weren't getting very thorough answers. I think we may try to switch reps if it's possible.

You can will it or give it for free and retain the qualified status normally but it does depend on specifics. Normally it needs to be family or one of the current names needs to stay on the deed but I suspect DVC won't care much as long it's it's a free transfer. The problem comes in when it's really a sale but listed as free when sent to DVC.
