trampoline owners.....

We have had it for 6 years - no insurance issues at all - but if they did threaten to cancel - Dh would say Fine - we don't need insurance anyways - its a waste of money -
(we don't owe on the house so it is not required)
So you have a few hundred thousand dollars laying around for a new home should say, God forbid, your house burnt down (provided you had no insurance), or if a child was terribly injured on that trampoline and you were sued???

There's a lot of scary stuff being said on this thread. :scared1:

DD injured her shoulder on a trampoline at her mom's house. I think they are just so dangerous and are asking for trouble.

I hate to say it but that is Darwin at work there culling the herd just like the guys I know that stunt with thier sportbikes I run mine to the limit racing in a race series at a race track but they choose to do it on the street. They are the problem with societies outlook on sportbikes it is the few that ruin it for the many.

Same goes for a lot of things -
we have a four wheeler
and my DH even lets the 4 year old drive it :scared1: (with a helmet and the speed control thing set so it doesn't go much fater than his little battery powered John Deere gator mind you)
I have even been know to J walk once in a while!

(sorry about the hi-jack for a moment - but the story is it depends on the person/people - its all relative...I want to enjoy life and not spend it worrying that everything is BAD and evil)

We had one for 4 years before we got rid of it in the move. We had some strict rules that applied to our children as well as anyone that visited, in the time we had it no one never ever got hurt. Our insurance company told us that as long as we had the net that goes around the trampoline they would insure us and we never had our insurance rate raised so I don’t think the trampoline raised it for us.

I won't go into what we have and what we don't have as it is completely irrelevent - we go through a local insurance company who KNOWS that my DH will cancel - he has made that clear to the agent when they tried to charge him some ridiculous fee for something stupid in one of the buildings - (amazing how that fee dissappeared off the bill - and it was all ok) and they want that check every month so they would not cancel.

Our kids have a Honda CRF50 dirtbike to ride it is also my pitbike at the racetrack. My son who is 4 is learning to ride it without the training wheels they also have a little pocketbike they ride around the neighbourhood. So for us a trampoline was of very little risk honestly.

Don't you all know that your children should not be doing ANYTHING EVER!? I don't know how many months of judgement you need to suffer at the hands of the 'Perfect Parents' here on the DIS to realize that! ;)

Now, get back over to Juniors chair made of foam and give him his water out of a straw and his lunch. No Peanut Butter and Jelly, he may get an allergy to nuts or wheat. Just organic salad. No tomatoes, and no dressing. Oh, and make sure to puree it so he doesn't choke.

Why don't you just give Junior a loaded gun to play with, while you are at it? Maybe some sharp knives? An open jar of rat poison?

Look, we can't protect our kids from EVERYTHING, but that is very different from PROVIDING them something that is inherently dangerous.

The DIS REALLY needs a popcorn smilie!

As much as I WANT a trampoline for my kids, I'm not getting one. They are dangerous, even if supervised and I just don't want to take the chance. Yes, kids do all kinds of dangerous things but this is one thing that we know about and we can control.

:rotfl: :rotfl: THANK YOU - I needed a good laugh :rotfl: :rotfl:

My neighbor had a trampoline, but had to get rid of it because their insurance company found out about it. Also, another neighbor's daughter would go in the backyard when the owner wasn't home. It was an accident waiting to happen. Knowing the parents of the girl, if she had been hurt on that property, they would sue in a heartbeat. Another neighbor bought a trampoline with a net a few months ago and something must have happened because it's gone now.

I won't allow my kids on trampolines, there are lots of other ways for them to have fun. Not being allowed to jump on a trampoline doesn't equate to having a deprived childhood. That's the choice that we have made for our kids and others can laugh about it all they want.

Yes, kids can get hurt many other ways, I have been to the ER enough times to know this. However, the probability of getting injured on a trampoline is quite high, just ask your pediatrician or any ER physician.

So just to ask any of you people that say no trampolines do you have kids in gymnastics? Our daughters are and they use the trampoline there all the time so if your kids do use one there what is the difference or do you not let them use that apparatus.

I am not a perfect parent. And I certainly didn't mean to come off that way.

And we have let our DS shoot a loaded gun at a shooting range (all properly supervised of course). He was the ripe old age of 11 at the time. :earseek:

Really I was just concerned over the insurance ramifications. Hey let your kids do whatever you want them to do. :)

My daughter now takes a class, at a local gym, called Tumbling and Trampoline. I think the differences are:

Trained staff available to spot and teach proper techniques/remove children not following safety rules

Proper mats and soft areas to fall if an accident occurs

A specific curriculum, learning techniques bit by bit instead of just high jumping randomly

A respect for the equipment and the teacher being taught at all levels

Somebody else paying for the insurance!!!!!!

It doesn't match the fun of our backyard tramp, whic I was sad to give up, but I wouldn't consider putting myself in the position of having no homeowner's insurance, so there was really no other choice.

And as far as your daughter goes, I think most people are visualizing her in a full body cast in traction. Whether or not I'd let my child back on the trampoline in a cast is beside the point, and I think some posters have been totally nasty about the subject. Until I see a picture of exactly what your child is wearing and read her chart, I'm minding my own business, which I think is excellent advice for everyone.

OMG, I swear I just spit coke all over my keyboard!! :rotfl2:

I don't see what the big flippin deal is over trampolines. I know several families that have had them for years without any accidents other than a couple of the kids banging into each other as they jump around. Heck, they do that in their room all the time. Their kids love them and have a great time. Supervision is key when it comes to trampolines. For what it's worth, a few weeks ago I had to take my daughter to the ER for a possible broken arm. She fell off her bike during a camping trip. I'm not planning on banning bikes because of the obvious risk to riding one. We're planning on getting an enclosed trampoline. My son has ADHD, and his therapist recommended a trampoline so that he can jump out his energy in a confined space a few times a day.

Oh, yeah, paraplegia IS hilarious!!!!

As long as you pay your hospital and rehab bills, I'll happily take your money!!

Thank you for being very polite about that DVCLiz I can [post a pic of her if you like I will just black out the face you know pedophiles and all you never know where they may be lurking. What hapened was she had a fracture in teh growth plate just below the knee joint and above the Tib/Fib. She has been back to see the Ortho every 6 months over the last couple years and no ill effects from the break.

WOW. There are sure a lot of people here who have an awful lot of time to critisize other peoples parenting choices. I'm sure all those who are jumping all over peoples parenting choices for allowing a trampoline never do anything questionable in parenting your children.

I personally do not care whether you have a trampoline or not. From my own experience, I will never own one. When I was in high school, we were required to do a few basic falls on a trampoline. Nothing fancy. We were being graded on this. We were to do a front fall with our arms across our chest. Somehow, I came down at to steep an angle and jammed my neck. I didn't do any permanent damage, but it hurt very badly for weeks. I won't ever get on one again.

No pic necessary, Chuckie - I was just making a point. Sometimes these threads digress into such a mean-spirited tone that I wnated to put my two cents worth in!

I really miss our trampoline, but I'm not betting the farm (or my house, in this case) on it, so until I can find coverage it will stay away. But I do think they are lots of fun!!!!
