I'm thinking about doing a 10K with my DH. I've been walking for awhile now (about 18 miles a week) and I've just started to really incorporate some running and I'm in pain! Does anyone have a link to a training program for a 10K that alternates running with walking? My goal would be the RFTT and I think I have to be within a 15 minute mile? I want to do it, but I'm discouraged with how bad my feet hurt. OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shan - Definitely check out Jeff Galloway's website for lots of good information on run/walking.

You can find pretty extensive information on his recommendations for run/walk intervals based off of your pace, along with a 13 week training program. You should also join us on the weekly thread as lots of people follow a run/walk routine. Good luck with your training!

Also, if your feet are hurting, have you been fitted with the right shoes? The ideal walking shoe might be different from your ideal running shoes. You also need a bigger shoe than you might think. Definitely find a specialty running store in your area to get checked out.

Thanks!

I think you're right - I need to go somewhere and get some help with my shoes. I do have running shoes, but my feet are killing me. I lay in bed at night wide awake with my arches throbbing. Right now I have New Balance.

Gonna go check out the site! :surfweb:

Hey Shan, I just bought some new sneakers. I haven't actually run in them yet. I will let you know when I do tomorrow. But they are so comfy! I got fitted for them and I had to buy an 8.5 and I usually wear a 7.5!! So definately go try on some new sneakers and don't be afraid to buy a little bigger (the girl at the store scared me with people's toenails turning black and falling off after doing endurance races).

shoes are of great importance. Having completed 14 marathons and any number of shorter races I know when my shoes are wearing out. In fact I tried a different style of shoes last fall (against my coach's best advice) and tweaked my knee so badly that I am just now getting back into heavy duty marathon training (Chicago for my 50th in October). I have two pairs of shoes that I alternate too!

Because of my tweeked knee I have gone back to the beginning so to speak. I am walking 4 minutes and jogging 1 minute. I have been doing it for about a month and still feel a knee twinge so I am not ready to up the pace at all. My physical therapist agrees with me:) Slowly but surely I am sure I will get back in the groove.

I am with the previous poster. Go to a good running store, have them do gait analysis to insure that you have the proper fit for your shoes. I have suffered from black toe nails (in fact I have one right now) and they don't feel the greatest. Once you try the shoes on ask to take them outside and try them out. Also ask what their return policy is because until you do a little bit of distance in them you might not realize whether they are right or not! Also, if they don't feel right in the store, I don't care what anyone says, they aren't going to feel right later on. You can't break shoes in. Also, running shoes are great for endurance walking! I train with a former Olympian (racewalker) and he agrees that in order to walk correctly you have to have the flexibility in your shoe that a running shoe gives you!

Have fun and maybe we will cross paths one day!

I did a post called walkers share training ideas you might find interesting. I'll bump it up for you.

Thanks everyone. I'm actually in week three of a thirteen week program now. I'm now taking a rest day in between workouts and it has made a huge difference in my feet! I was walking Monday thru Friday and I think it was just too much for my feet.

Regardless, I do plan on going to a running store like you all suggested. :goodvibes

Shan - I would not walk/run more than four days a week, with rest days in between as you have discovered. If your arches uhurt, new shoes will liley help too. A good runnign store will find teh ones that work for you. Most will have you walk with your shoes foff to figure out what you need. GOod luck!

I just got the book "Marathoning for Mortals" and inside is a training program for a walk/run and a run/walk of both the half marathon and the full.

HTH!
