Training for my first 5K. Will need help and support!

Hi everyone, I am fairly new to the WISH Forum. I signed up for the 2009 Disney Family 5K. I realize from reading the board that this is a very fun, low stress event. However, I do want to take it seriously and be prepared.

My goal is to walk the 5K because my knees are very bad and it is difficult to run. I have a background of competitive dance and gymnastics but once I quit my body was not able to stay in shape. My goal is to get back in shape and I figure this event is a great way to start! I don't see myself as becoming a competitive walker/runner but there is no better motivator for me than Disney!

I have been reading the board and already gotten some tips. I went to Target and bought some walking clothes (non-cotton) and I bought a stick of Body Glide.

I also have a mini-trampoline that I use, so I will somehow incorporate that into my training.

I just wanted to say "hi" and introduce myself to everyone because I am sure that over the next several months I will have tons of questions and need lots of support as I embark on this journey!

I'm going to move your thread to the Events/Competition sub-board where the chatter is more focused on training, etc. I look forward to cheering you on! if you need accountability to get those training workouts in, there is a monthy exercise challenge thread where we help each other stay commited to our plan.

I have an opening on a team, we just had one of our angels, go inactive for a while to help a family member through a life crisis. If you would like to be on a team to post your miles and hours exercised just let me know.

DisneyTampa I too have signed up for the 5k in January. This will be my first race as well so I understand your situations. I also have bad knees and will be walking but thankfully I have met the Panda and Tracy who have been giving me some advice. With that, my times are improving and so is my stamina. They really know what they are talking about. My advice is to train hard but have fun and hopefully, I will be able to see you there. I am so looking forward to meeting sooooo many WISHers. This will be awesome.

I am new to WISH too! I just did the Minnie 5K/15K for my first races! Also, I live in Palm Harbor, so I might not be too far from you! :)

I am currently walking 1 mile 3 times a week. On my off days I am doing various exercises on my mini trampoline.
