DS is returning to London from Athens on EasyJet on Jan l.

He's traveling up to Nottingham then to stay with a friend and hoping to take the train. Someone told me trains don't run in GB on Jan lst? Is this true?

If so, what about buses?

Thanks, herc

I'm pretty certain that there are trains but that they operate a restricted service - as they do on all public holidays. This means that there are far fewer trains than usual and often engineering work takes place so this could mean delays and a replacement bus service for some lines.

You can check out www.nationalrail.co.uk - I noticed too that the site had some pages particularly for visitors from outside Britain that, although I doubt it will provide the info you are asking, it may well have an e-mail addy so that you can ask about the service.

I'd think there would be some kind of coach service that he could use - do you know at which airport he's arriving?

From that site there's a link to Christmas and New Year travel arrangements.

The schedule will be available from end of October.

Some trains do run but they'll be very limited and pre-booking is advisable on those services.

Good, there is hope.

DS will be arriving in London at Gatwick at noon on the First of Jan.

I'll check that link. Thank you.
