We plan on driving down from the north on Monday February 5th. What times do we need to avoid I-5 in the afternoon to avoid the rush hour traffic? If we planned on arriving in Anaheim around 3, would we avoid the bulk of the traffic from the Grapevine and further south?

I used to drive almost weekly from NorCal to and trough SoCal. My strategy was to time the drive to be at downtown LA before 12 noon or after 8pm and it was generally smooth sailing if I could make that happen. If you back up your arrival to 1:30-2 you will be better off. Traffic starts building through Commerce starting at 2pm and get increasingly worse from there.

Traffic from Grapevine to LA will only be a really issue during the AM commute hours.

I drove Burlingame to Disneyland in july. I left Burlingame at 3pm and arrived at DL around 9 pm. I hit very little traffic.
