Okay after reading many threads about different trading pins (as a newbie) could someone please explain the:

who
What
Where

of trading pins.

TIA.

I do quite a bit of pin trading. It's a pretty simple hobby.

Cast members throughout the Parks have lanyards and hip pouches with pins. They are ALL for trading with guests. They are not the CMs personal pins. Simply approach them and ask nicely if you can look at their pins. They will show you what is on their lanyard (or pouch). If you see something you like, tell them, give them any Disney pin in exchange, and the pin is yours.

A few simple rules:
1. You can only trade 2 pins per CM.
2. They cannot take a pin that is already on their lanyard.
3 There are some lanyards that are teal colored. Those are for kid (under 12) traders only.

There are also books of pins you can flip through that are available daily in Frontierland. I ALWAYS mess up the times, but you can ask at City Hall. Same rules, just per book, not lanyard.

Does that help? If you have any further questions, post here and I will try to answer.

I started out with 1 pin gifted to me from a friend who collected. I thought the pins were cute, but "am not collecting them." I now have over 350 pins.

thanks for responding, I am thinking it might be a fun thing for DD to start she is 4 and very social. How would I go about getting a pin to start trading?

As far as getting pins to start you have a few options. You can either purchase a "starter box" in the parks- they usually have anywhere from 4-7 pins per box, about 30 bucks per box. You can purchase traders online, or you can purchase pins individually in the parks for 7-15 dollars each.

For a good list of eBayer sellers who sell "good" traders please visit the collectors board or PM me. :) I've purchased from mousepinsonline.com and been very pleased with what I've received as well. You can find pins for less than rack prices by shopping on eBay but eBay is rampant with pins that are not authorized or approved by Disney, these pins are commonly called scrappers and are sold for pennies on the dollar. I just want you to be aware that there are sellers/traders out there with "scrapped" pins that were not approved by Disney and were supposed to be thrown out (or scrapped, hence the term scrapper) or destroy but instead were sold on the secondardy market.

In the parks you can find starter sets with lanyards and pins for trading or you can find lanyards by themselves (they make small ones for smaller children) and then just buy an assortment pack for trading. Have fun trading, I'm sure your DD will love it!! :)

thanks for the advice, if we are going to start this I want to do it right.:cool1:

My DD turned 6 and has been waiting to do this. ( I made rule you have to be 6, don't ask just a mommy thing) One tip we have learned through friends is go to the outlet store and stock up some pins you would like to trade. It's a good start for a reasonable price. There is an outlet store in Anaheim near the park. Just a thought...:hippie:

We have had great luck buying through eBay and they are WAY less expensive than buying the starter packs. Look for sellers with high ratings and that say they only have Disney sanctioned pins in their grab bags. I thought my children would be happy to trade them away since they are not pins they picked out. however, in every batch, there are several they decide to keep for themselves. We always get at least several hidden mickey(special addition) pins in every grab bag.

The sellers I have dealt with have even made note of my info that I was buying for a boy and a girl and have sent several that were obviously picked out for each of them.

My children have the rule that they only trade with CMs, never other people.

Using feedback only is not the best way to know whether the seller has scrappers or not. There are too many people who simply don't care or don't know enough to say "I got scrappers" in feedback. There are some good guidelines on the Collector's Board, and again, there is a whole list of good sellers, sellers that people have received scrappers from, sellers people have had mixed scrappers & legit pins, etc etc. Please check the CB for the posts I am referring to, I have 4 traders in my family, we never go to DL/DCA without at least 100 pins to trade and I don't pay over $3 a pin. It can be done. :)
