Trading in SSR for RIV or GFV

Evening all,

After recent stays at RIV and GVF we are tempted to add on to our contracts as existing direct members. However, we don’t really need any more points, we would just like the ability to book one of these resorts at the 11 month mark. Is our only option to sell one of our SSR contracts privately and then purchase a contract for RIV or GFV or is there anyway of trading in our SSR contract by selling it back to Disney and paying a premium to purchase a similar number of points at RIV or GFV from them? I’m pretty certain the only option is to sell privately via an agent, but thought I’d double check. It would be so much easier to be able to trade the SSR points in with Disney.

I don't think you can trade it in. However, you might want to consider buying your RIV or VGF points before you sell your existing contract so that you can get the member price. If you sell first then you may have to buy your new contract at new-member pricing which I don't believe is as good...?

You don't want Disney buying back a contract from you. What were they offering OKW owners, 80 dollars a point, like...last year? If current member pricing is important to you, you'll want to buy direct and then resell the SSR contract.

You’re right, the existing member price is slightly better. However we have three direct contracts at SSR and would only sell one of them so it wouldn’t cause us an issue (other than the fact the member offer might be reduced by the time the sale went through).

Disney offers well below market value when or if they agree to take a contract back.

We sold our SSR to add on more VGF just recently. We have also sold other contracts over the years to buy other ones.

We just waited until it went to ROFR and then bought direc.t. We spread it out for 6 months on our Disney visa so we had time to get the proceeds from the sale.

Did you add on GF direct or resale? I’m now thinking we are better to sell our resale AKL (which is restricted and has higher dues), keep our SSR contracts and perhaps buy GF resale given the low direct prices seem to be pushing the resale price down.

Is there any benefit in selling and buying with the same broker?

We added on to our existing VGF with more points last month and we sold our AKV points to help with that. Disney didn't even want to make on offer on our AKV points, which is great because we ended up doubling our money exactly. So selling your points to finance the new purchase worked for us.

Direct. We love RIV and do not want any restricted points.

Years ago, I did buy and sell with the same broker and they charged me a little less for commission for the sale. Whether anyone does that now? All you can do is ask!

I really liked RIV too, particularly the most amazing breakfast at Topolinos! It might be because the resort has a slightly more hotel feel to it and everything is slightly easier to reach. I’m surprised that I slightly preferred it to VGF. I didn’t expect that.

When it was first announced, I never thought I would like it, let alone buy both direct and resale points there. It is my favorite, favorite resort and stay every time I go as part of a split stay. It is why I sold the BLT contract I bought in 2020 last year because it was restricted and I didn't like that aspect.

I tool like the hotel feel of it but to be honest, I love the lake and the look over to CBR. It makes me feel like I am looking out in the Bahamas, but at the same time, at a luxury resort.

I can appreciate this too Sandisw. We visited RIV on our last trip in March and I loved the feel of the resort and walking around. I would stay there in a heartbeat! 😊
