I know somewhere on here I saw what I believe were statistics concerning the trading of Disney points for other timeshares through the WPC. Does anyone remember that thread?

From personal experience, how has trading worked. Do you end up getting the request more times than not? We live in PA, and there look to be some great spots within "driving distance" of us in the northeast and down in VA. I know people don't recommend using Disney points for other vacations because of value issues, but for me I enjoy the idea of being able to go elsewhere.

Please let me know!!!

Me too.....I would love to see a board where people just posted reviews and expereiences with trading oout!!!!! We have owned si8nce 2000, and have never traded out, but like that we have the option.....and would maybe like to start doing this!!!!!!

I would like to get this information too. We looked at several of the resorts available and many look very relaxing.

I don't own DVC, but if I did I would never exchange out of it (I trade in a lot as I'm one of the few FF owners who trades II). The maintenance fees are just too high and you have to trade in complete weeks. Unless, I could be guaranteed a Marriot - no way. I trade a lot in II and from my experiences Marriot is the hardest trade to get, because of Marriot's internal trade preferences.

To go other places I would seriously consider a resale points package from Bluegreen, Worldmark, or Fairfield. These would offer a lot more value for going other places and can be picked up on ebay for very little.

If you're looking at eastern resorts, FF has many nice resorts (Worldmark has better availability in the West). You could go for just weekends or 3-4 night getaways. FF is currently building in the Poconos as well. FF points get internal preferance within the RCI system, so some really good trades can be had for minimal point values back into FF. I know someone who does own DVC and uses DVC points only for DVC and FF points for everything else.

This is all JMP though. Check out Tug for more info.

If you want to see some of the resorts on Interval's website, go to intervalworld.com and click on "search the resort directory." I'm pretty sure you can look at the Interval resort directory without having a membership number and password for the site.

I would definitely put up some DVC points for trades into Marriotts, Westin's, and Hyatts. Oh, the Royal Resorts in Cancun would be nice, too. :thumbsup2

Thank you, Dean! That is what I was looking for.

I'm not saying I am buying DVC to exchange all the time. I'm thinking maybe every 3-5 years I may want to do something a little different. Maybe it isn't worth it, but I feel I need to look into it at least :-)

And that would be a reasonable approach if you plan far ahead, at least a year and better 2 years out.

By the way, Dean, I'm starting to understand this value concept when trading points to go to one of these other timeshares.

For example, I've seen some ads on other websites for timeshares in williamsburg, va that are the exact same as what is offered through Disney. Rental price for a week ranges from $800-$1400 for a 2 BR depending on the person. Now if I used my DVC points, I'd pay 270 points for a 2 BR.

I guess the right play would be to pay cash for the vacation and rent my points for $9-$11 per point. That would yield tremendous savings (I figure it would pay for the trip, pay my DVC fee for the year, and maybe leave a little leftover!)

We've exchanged DVC for Aruba and Palm Springs. We also have enough points that we book a yearly WDW stay too. :goodvibes The Aruba exchange came though at about the 60 day mark, so we didn't think we were even going to get that one. We've enjoyed the exchanges. The only other one I'd like to do is Westin St. John, and that's so hard to get I don't know if I'd even bother.

Hope that helps.

The experts already know these things, but since it they haven't been mentioned on this thread, here's some other critical points about trading:

If you want to raise the likelihood of getting a trade you're happy with, here's the critical path you need to follow:

- Make your request far in advance (at least a year out, preferably 1.5)

- Think "off or pre/post high season." You are much more likely to get a nice Caribbean property in the early fall or mid Spring than in February. Forget about major holidays at any popular destination. For those of us with kids, try to find times you can travel when a good number of school systems are open (my favorite here is mid to late August, a lot of sunbelt systems are already open, but schools in parts of the west, midwest and northeast aren't).

- Don't make only one "bet". Instead, come up with a first/second third choice list of both properties and dates you can accept, and give this to DVC when you request a trade (e.g., Aruba resort X in October or June, Hawaii resort Z anytime in the summer. etc.) . The more flexibility you give them in searching, the more likely they are to come up with something.

WOW there is so much to think about. We are new DVCer's so I am sure we will be using our points at WDW and DL first, with doing exchanges later on, but we had better plan ahead ;)

Does it tell you any where what the low, mid, high season is for each place we can exchange with? I know that it is different for each area, but I am not sure where we can tell at a glance. I know more research would tell, but wondering if there was an "easy" answer :)

No easy answer and it's actually resort by resort, not even area by area. Overall I'd look at the II listings and see what's red and not. IF it's not red, assume it's low season. If it's red, it will likely be Mid or High season. High season is Peak which is only a subset of red time for most places. Another way is to ask her or on TUG and you could likely get a better idea. Truth if you don't have a definite answer until they find as match because it's set by the resort and not DVC or even II.

Thanks Dean! What is TUG? OK when I typed that I figured it out, The Unofficial Guide. :p
