Just thinking about it, but we may want to take the kids to Cancun next year. How do I figure out what my points are worth when exchanging? Can I borrow points to exchange? Just starting to educate myself so all advice is welcome.

A summer exchange to Cancun should be around 160 pts for a 1 BR or 270 for a 2 BR. You can value them how you like but they are worth $13-15 a point minus expenses and taxes if you rent them. The problem with MX is it's cheap to get to by exchange or rental and there are a lot of all inclusive's which are almost always a bad deal financially even as a cheap exchange and even easier to trade into. The best bet for an exchange using DVC seems to be the Royal Mayan. If you know someone who has RCI or II directly, they should be able to get you something much cheaper. You may also want to look at the Mayan Palace just south of Cancun. If you can get access from someone you know to RCI or II, you pick up a whole host of other options as well as the chance to get something for very little potentially including the Mayan Palace's better sister's, Grand Mayan and Grand Bliss. You could also look at rental prices for places like the Royal Sands or other true Royal resorts as very little Royal Mayan inventory gets to RCI, most go to II.

Thanks Dean. Sounds complicated. Between trying to figure this out and dealing with all the new changes with a Disney vacation, I might just stay home :crazy2:

It's really not that complicated but there is a certain amount of education/information one needs for any exchange. You decide where/when you want to go, what resorts you'll accept, you plan ahead (1 yr out of more best) and you put in an ongoing request. Like anything else the devil's in the details and I'd personally add 1 more step, that once you do your investigation, you make a determination as to the reasonableness and dollar value you're receiving, IMO there are few if any that meet that test in MX. Let me give you an absolutely real world, albeit extreme, example. A few years ago we went to Cabo for 2 weeks on exchange (non DVC). Our total cost for the 2 weeks including exchange fees and indirect timeshare costs was around $300-350 per week. That resort is on II's signature collection list and would have been 1500 DVC points to exchange using DVC. That trade now really would actually probably be cheaper than it was then in my situation.

I looked at the AI pricing for a couple of the higher end Cancun options and they ranged from around $2300 low season to right at $3000 high season double occupancy meaning you'd pay the same for 1 as for 2. I remember looking at one for Cozumel a few years ago that was over $4K for 2. The other gotcha you sometimes see on AI's is SOME require pay for the private occupancy no matter who's along so it's possible to be required to pay for 4 in a 2 BR even when there's only 2 people.

Thank you Dean. Sounds like I am better off just renting for Cancun.

Not uncommonly you can find a good AI for a total price inclusive of room, fees and air for the same or less than simply the AI fee and air alone and save the DVC points. As a rule I'm not enamored with AI's but I am a big fan of some meal plans I've seen when they aren't too restrictive.

The Royal Mayan was sold so that should no longer be an option to trade into through RCI.

I know it was sold but my understanding was the RTU ran through 2015. I hadn't heard the changeover date otherwise. It's a shame as it was the only true Royal Resort in RCI, now it's just VCI (Royal Cancun) that's in RCI.
