Trader Sam’s mugs were different inside

The mugs used for drinks were coated with something like a clear glaze from what I recall. The ones we brought home were more of a chalky finish. Is the coating something you can do yourself to help with wear and washing?

Wow, imagine that Disney taking the cheap route... again.

That's not good at all IMHO, the glaze keeps the alcohol/sugars/acids from coming in contact with the bare porous material from the mug after the bisque firing. If you then wash it out with soap you're not going to get all of the soap out of the pits. Sounds like a bad thing, I wounder if Disney either cheapened out or failed quality control. I'd ask in the Trader Sam mug communities on Facebook and Reddit to see if all the mugs are like that or just some.

This is normal and just a style thing. Usually the mugs they are serving in are the 1st editions because they have a stash to use. The editions change and the colors do to, so the finish might as well. I have a 1st edition Krakatoa and the red lava is glazed but the lower, grey/tan part is chalky. I have a chalky barrell one I got at Disneyland, and it is a 3rd edition (light beige) as opposed to the glazed, dark brown first edition. I am honestly not sure WHY they vary, but they always have going back quite a way.

I honestly didn't notice any difference between any of my take-homes and what I had at the bar (Grotto). I've got the uh oa, nautilus, krakatoa, hippopoto mai tai, the surfboard shots...all of them look the same as the restaurant versions - looking at Krakatoa, the red is all glazed and the tan seems to be at least somewhat glazed - mine's a 1st edition. The nautilus and uh oa are fully glazed. My mai tai is a first edition, so is glass. The rum shots don't come with the surfboard - but there are third-party ones available all over the web. I've also got a white and black pearl which are just plastic - I got a black one in an early visit which are rare, so decided I should have a white one in the collection just to make the set.

We own over 500 tiki mugs for our home bar. Just ordered 4 from tiki land trading and was north of $400. Many are hand made and will definitely get some variations in quality and end product...even when paying some nutty prices.

My recommendation...which is what I do to the glasses:

1) add 3 types of rum
2) add some fresh squeezed juices
3) add plastic straw with little umbrella
4) drink

I totally misread things I thought you were talking INSIDE the mug, on the outside - you can't really do much beyond always hand washing.
