Which suggests the labor market is broken not that UI is a bad thing. Especially in industries like food service, which are high exposure risks, have tons of sexual harassment, and are often just awful jobs.

Of course the labor market is broken, It's why corporate america loves those open borders which generate lots of downward pressure on wages even in skilled trades (carpenters/electricians/plumbers for example) which is one of the reasons we have the 'Profits without Prosperity' problem. If we did like Canada and Australia do we'd have a point system which ensures an adquate supply of workers at a living wage not as corporate america likes skilled workers at minimum or lower wages.

Here is an article from one of the </SARC> leading purveyors of fake news </SARCOFF> https://hbr.org/2014/09/profits-without-prosperity

Had to use the sarcasm font otherwise people might misunderstand

So, I have a divorced friend with 2 kids. Her ex-husband won't let her get passports for the kids, even though she would pay for them. She can take them on a closed-loop cruise though with their birth certificates. Anyway, everyone has different circumstances and passports just aren't an option for some people.

Yes. Not all people can get a passport. I would hazard to guess that 90%+ of the American population can though. It is sad about your friend. She won’t be able to take her kids out of the country because of an ex husband. Lots of other people can take their kids out of the country for a cruise. Multiple other cruise lines have already announced cruises out of the Caribbean and Bahamas. Just pointing out that DCL should too since the CDC is being so unreasonable.

DCL already HAS they are cruising out of the UK this year. Why deal with a unaccountable federal agency when there are governments willing to welcome your business with open arms. But before you rush out to buy airline tix to the UK, DCL is saying they will only accept UK passport holders. So if you hold a British passport go for it (I do know a fair amount of dual citizens so they can go).

I have to ask if it is easier with the required vaccine to validate in a place like the UK. I am assuming NHS is tracking for all recipients. US tracking is... hodge podge at best, across multiple states, and people are buying vax cards online to fake it already.

Its not just NHS tracking the vaccinations in The UK, all European countries have a centralized data base for the vaccination process and its my understanding that the countries are working with The WHO to link the data bases for a European wide Digital vaccine passport.

Its going to be very interesting over the next few months and 2 years, as what will it mean for countries such as USA who don't have a central data base and are very much against a digital vaccine passport. Could USA tourists be shut out of Europe due to not having a digital vaccine passport?????

Definitely not apples to apples.

I believe Canada is also considering vaccine passports, and could very well restrict Americans.

Frankly, as I understand regulatory authority, DeSantis doesn't have the right to regulate if cruise lines require vaccines.

This gets into how the Coast Guard and CDC can restrict cruising, and that DeSantis cannot just allow it because of Florida ports. He doesn't have that authority.

The CDC does report in to the executive and legislative branches. They are not without oversight. But it is absolutely true that their mission fails to include a willingness to decide how many deaths are okay in the name of economics.

So governors have the authority to tell businesses to totally shut down, mask up, put in capacity restrictions, and socially distance. But governors do not have the authority to say a business can't require vaccines?

Funny how so many people support authoritarianism when they support their government, and then suddenly turn against it when they don't like the government. All during the pandemic people were claiming businesses have no rights. They all have to do what the government says to do. They have to follow the CDC! Barbers and salon owners were actually being arrested because they were opening in defiance of the government in order to try to make a living. But now all of a sudden, these exact same people that cheered those arrests are suddenly standing up for the rights of businesses to require vaccinations against a government that doesn't mandate them?

The blatant hypocrisy during this pandemic has been unreal. Totally unreal!

So governors have the authority to tell businesses to totally shut down, mask up, put in capacity restrictions, and socially distance. But governors do not have the authority to say a business can't require vaccines?

Commerce clause applies. This isn't hypocrisy. This is about the difference between intrastate and interstate commerce and who owns regulatory authority. Liquor licenses, for instance, are hyper-local. Many things are licensed at the state level. But a governor cannot override the PVSA because it falls under the Commerce Clause.

The Constitution has been in place a long time, and this separation of authority has been baked in since the start.

I never worked in food service so don't know.

Everyone should work a service industry or food job once in their lives, just for the perspective. Getting screamed at, getting fired for wanting your legal break, not being allowed to bring a lunch for your break, sexual harassment... all for $2.13/hour plus tips! Add in a pandemic, and... well, of course some employers are struggling to hire.

($2.13/hour is the federal minimum wage for tipped workers. While tips can pad this, they are inconsistent, and also subject to customer whim. You get the anti-masker who is mad about the server following guidleines for the restaurant to be open? There goes the tip. You get the drunk guy who wants to pinch your booty and you won't have it? Manager complaint AND no tip!)

Yeah.....that's ridiculous....
If they will be doing this for the US cruises restart too, I'll be spending my hard-earned money elsewhere for the foreseeable future.

Have fun spending thousands of dollars for a vacation to a floating bio containment lab!

I said I never worked in a food service job. I did work in a minimum wage service job, just not in a tipped position. To be honest the time I was making minimum wage as a "hiker" at Budget Rent a Car, hand washing and vacuuming cars outdoors on a 100 degree day, I did wonder what it would be like to work in an air conditioned restaurant, getting the same base pay PLUS tips.
No doubt the past year here with restaurants closed, and even now, legally limited to operate at a fraction of their capacity has had to be a hardship on those who rely not on the minimum wage, but on the tips. But there is no sub-minimum wage in California, everyone has to make the minimum of $14 an hour ($15 an hour in a new months). And I am in the city that made national news in 2019 when the local Chick Fil A owner announced a training wage of $17 an hour because today's 16 year olds wouldn't work for anything less. ($20 an hour after 3 months probation)
And reading on my local "Next Door", my neighborhood Taco Bell has gone from 24 hours to being open 12 hours a day. Plenty of customers, they don't have the staff to be open any longer.
Again, I am in California and I can't say EVERYONE follows the break rules, but that has been a hot topic here. I can be fired for NOT taking my UNPAID break on time. I have a signed acknowledgement in my personnel file on that. Not a fan of the break rules because prior to a crackdown 10 years ago, I worked 8 straight without a break for nearly 30 years. A forced unpaid break to me is just keeping me from going home earlier. Fortunately, they have allowed us to cut our mandatory break from an hour, to 30 minutes, which is the state minimum.
And prior to the pandemic, it was not uncommon in a restaurant to have a server come by and tell us that "so and so will be taking over my tables for the next half hour while I take my break".

I'm waiting to see Carnival's plan. The carnival CEO has already stated that they do not want to mandate vaccines so they are onboard with DeSantis. Carnival is half the price. I can handle the mask thing as long as there are activities and a club for my teen. He really wants to cruise for his birthday. I won't pay DCL money for this type of cruise that's for sure.

if she has physical cusstody of the kids even if they have joint custody she can get passports for them. she doesn't need his permission. my brother got a passport for his son and his exwife had physical custody of the son but he did need her permission to take the boy out of the country.
