Toys to bring for a 27 month old?

Someone mentioned bringing toys for her toddler in another thread and she said she brought way too many and that made me think of this question. How many toys have you found necessary to bring for a child this age? We don't plan on spending an enormous amount of time in our room, but we will be there some of course. We will be flying, so I can't pack a bunch. But I guess I'll need to bring a few things for her to play with. What items have you brought that were popular with a 2ish girl?

I have a DS who just loves to have trucks and people to make believe with, but we also rented some fabulous toys from A Baby's Best Friend (www.abbf.com). This is the way to go to ensure that you don't take up too much precious room for their toys. Our friends, who have a DD, brought her own little suitcase packed with barbies and dolls. We made sure we had lots of books along and little toys like train engines and sand box toys too.

When I travel with DD (2 1/2) I always fill 1 sm duffel with "her stuff". I throw in 3 of her favorite books. 2 dolls. 1 quiet toy, and 2 other toys. A doll, a book, and the quiet toy join us on the plane. The others.. I just toss the bag in the corner of the hotel room and that is her toy corner. She plays as she wants and cleans up b/f bed. She'll sleep w/ 1 of her dolls each night.

The good thing is, they don't really remember or miss their other toys. Also, they do find toys in things like paper and pen, remotes, cell phs etc. Don't overdo it, just take a few favorites, and you will be just fine.

How about a bag of rocks and some plastic dishes with some plastic food? Shouldn't take up very much space in the suitcase

I used to bring a small "childsize" suitcase with toys for my 2 dd's to share. I can't really remember what a 2yo plays with but whatever she is "into" just before you go. Bring some favorite toys, a small stuffed animals, cuddlies or dolls, and some books for bedtime. I brought a nightlight and 2 lovies as well as some childproofing stuff for the room, like outlet covers and window clings for the sliding glass doors. You will probably be buying some new stuff, stuffed animals and glow spinny toys so leave some room!

When we went on a non disney vacation this summer I bought a diaper bag full of toys and my dd hardly played with any of them. She was to busy taking in everything new. I also had a little trouble with security at the airport, they took all they toys out and search through them. They said the monitors were picking up small hinges?? When we go to Disney in Jan my DD will be 21 months, I am not bringing many toys. Just some small things to keep her occupied on the plane. Maybe some crayons and paper.

Thanks for all the ideas. Actually, a bag of rocks and plastic dishes are some of dd's favorite toys right now if you can believe that! How funny that you would mention those two items....oh my gosh! I just realized that OCDisney is my husband! He just changed his user name and I had forgotten. Boy, he got me hook, line and sinker! Too funny!

Yes, my dd loves her bag of rocks. The shiny pretty kind you can buy at souvenir places. She's never been one to put nonfood items in her mouth, so that hasn't been an issue.

Okay....back to the subject at hand...again thanks for the ideas to all of the rest of you. I'd forgotten about the safety items I should bring. I think I'll go with just a couple of small toys...probably rocks and dishes... and then just rely on what's at hand in the room and what we buy.

I almost forgot my girls fav - pool toys. My girls like goggles and but yor dd may neeed swimmy wings. We like something that floats and something that sinks as well as bubble juice. My youngest likes to swim with her kelly dolls so they double as a toy and pool toy. If your staying at a disney resort with a beach maybe some sand toys.

we don't take many toys at all, we usually buy a few beanies while we are out there, and I have some stuff for on the plane, but it doesn't get played with much while we are at Disney, they are just too busy and too tired to be bothered with toys in the room

I took a lot of stuff for our 30 month old son. The only things we really needed were his bedtime book and stuffed animal. We bought a few small things there that he loved - his favorite: a pen that has a train on top that makes choo-choo sounds. We also did a few sticker books on the plane.

We just got back about a week ago and I didn't even take the two stuffed animals I brought for DS (2 years) out of the suitcase. The only activities he did was coloring on the hotel stationary with crayons we got at a restaurant and pretending to call his grandpa on the phone that we unplugged.

ITA with the above posts -you definitely do not need many toys. My suggestions: stuffed animal for bedtime, books, a couple of favorite videos (if your room will have a VCR) and some small figurine-type toys (like you get at fast food places).

Honestly they seem to find more entertainment with the hotel pen and paper than anything else. Also remember that you are sure to pick up a few souvenirs while you're on vacation so those will be temporarily much more interesting than her old toys.

Wow, my girls must really be in the minority but they really need their "downtime, playtime". We try and take some time off each day and although they love the parks, playground time, pool time, and playing polly pocket, etc at some point during the day really helps them. They love to color and will sit in the room for a while and wind down coloring in the evening. I don't bring alot but I find they use most of what I bring, coloring, polly pocket, bubble juice and even a jump rope in addition to a book or two and loveys. I guess they just like to do normal kid stuff as well as vacation stuff. One of their favoite days at WS was at the UK playing hopscotch with lots of other kids.

Thanks for asking this question. I was really just starting to wonder how much to pack for DS in the toy department. I know I will need to take his two bedtime pals (stuffed pluto and a stuffed polar bear) but other than a few books I didn't know how much further to go. I am sure he will pick up a few items during the trip but I don't want him to be so bored during the time we are in the room that he causes too much extra trouble.
