A friend wants me to bring one back for her disabled son.
Do you know how big the set is and would I have any trouble at the airport as I don't want to risk putting it in a suitcase

Thanks

It's pretty big. If you were to put it in a suitcase, it's likely the only thing you'd be able to fit in there. My son wanted to buy one a few years back and we managed to dissuade him. And, yes, I think it would have to count as an extra piece of luggage.

You can see what the box looks like at this link and, in the description it mentions that they ship in a box measuring 20 x12 x 12 inches so that gives you a pretty accurate idea of its size.

I'd suggest to them they just order one on line. That is going to be a major pain in your neck to get back TBH.

even if you take it out of the box, it's still a huge set

the size of it is the only reason why I don't have one in my den :p

We've brought back several over the years on behalf of our oldest :rotfl::rotfl: ....... and yes he still get's it ALL out occasionally in the garden including a Spaceship Earth, Magic Kingdom Castle, Polynesian Hotel an Animal Kingdom Tree of Life and approx 700m of track :eek:

The ONLY way to bring back a starter pack which includes a monorail train (4 carriages I think) and the associated track is to unpack it all, chuck out the packing stuff that comes in the box and fold the box flat to re use when you get back home. You can then wrap up the train, track and little character pieces in clothes to protect them in your suitcase.

If your friend doesn't mind receiving the box in this way then it really doesn't take up too much room in your suitcase. If on the other hand she wants to receive it in pristine fashion then I suggest as PP have said and she orders it over the phone and pays all the associated shipping and tax costs.

Thank you all, I didn't realize it was so big, but her son lives in a care home and he really wants a red one. They did buy one off e bay but it was broken.
So I'll try and get it home somehow.

Funny, I've posted the same suggestion to someone else tonight, but would your friend be willing to pay for/towards an extra bag on your flight home, if your airline allows this? It would be cheaper than shipping. The monorail set, although boxed is not very solid and there is a limit to how much impact it would handle. Having a dedicated bag for the purpose would allow you to get the store where you purchase it to pack it for a flight (just ask, they will wrap it and then some!) if you have spare gaps in the suitcase, you can always put soft things like socks and t shirts in there to keep it tight. I'm willing to bet that this is cheaper than the shipping and tax costs.

Maybe Disneynutinlondon has the dimensions of the box? That would help you choose a suitable case and one to pack it into on the outbound.

our son is planning on getting one of these in August :)
Ive already read a few threads on suggestions of how to bring it home.
He also wants the Contemporary resort, not sure how we'll manage that as well:rotfl:

We have one at home complete in box. We brought it home fully packed.

I am away at the moment but will measure the box if you want next week when we get home?

I have 3 boys and so we have brought 3 home one year!
They are big lol but we had no problems putting all of them in one case what we did is take the stuff out, then flat packed the box to take with us,

We have both but bought them over 2 trips - I can measure the boxes when I get home. The CR needs to come home packed really it's quite fragile.

We bought one years ago and the train set the following trip. Both came back in a suitcase surrounded by soft clothes and travelled fine. We always take an empty case so it worked fine for us. Alternatively you can ask Disney to ship but I think it is about $80

I really want one of these, but the thought of getting it home does make me nervous...I tend to overpack so never have enough room on the return journey!

we bought the railway home. We bought one of those massive Disney plastic bags and took it as hand luggage. We did however manage to hide it at check in as it was a bit oversized!. The cabin crew just looked the other way and said they are used to it. That was with VA and not sure what they'd do nowadays if you took on oversized hand luggage:confused3

We bought the monorail back last ear for xmas present and it fitted in our case in the box fine but we have big cases, we filled the gals around the box with our clothes

Girls love it and i will be adding bits this year
