We are taking our first trip to Vero Beach. Is anyone familiar with the small towns like Sebastian which are nearby and have shopping and restaurants on the water?

Not intimately, but generally -- what is your specific question? I'm sure there are quite a few here who could probably answer.

I recommend Mulligans in Vero Beach. We sat outside for lunch watching the waves listening to a live band at the beach playing Jimmy Buffett songs...it was awesome!

For dinner we loved Cap't Hirams North Rt 1 in Sebastian (marker 66). And next door there is a cool beach bar with live music (for all ages some nights) if you are interested in checking that out too.

We didn't do a ton of shopping. But there's a big mall in Sebastian and lots of cute little shops in Vero Beach near Mulligans.

We also dropped by a citrus farm. They had a tasting/samples, we bought some fresh oranges & juice and then walked through their orchard a bit.

Thanks DisneyDreamers that is exactly the type of information I was looking for. We are going to be there 3 days and am looking for things to do other than the beach and pool.

VB has an outlet mall near I- 95. Also, there are a lot of stores and restaurants right there too. If you are coming from the north or Disney, the exit that has the outlet malls will be the next exit south from the one you will take to get to the VB resort

The VB resort is on the east side of the intercoastal waterway and its mostly residential and you must cross a bridge to get there. In order to get to most markets, restaurants etc you must cross over the bridge again. It can be very confusing, especially at night since the bridges are space apart by 8-10 miles in that area. We got lost twice (last year and this year) in the SAME spot. There is a sign that says "beaches" and you can only get to the beaches by crossing over a bridge so we thought we were going down a road that had a bridge and it lead us down a very dark and lonely road with RR tracks---

Make sure you bring a GPS and study the map. Its not that difficult, but its really not built up too much (unlike orlando) so there is a lot of dark roads at night. During the day, its not bad.

Have a great trip !!

Mulligans has an awesome breakfast too. Lobster omelette and a Hibiscus Mimosa, all while watching the waves. Yummy.
