Trying to decide if we want to book a town car for the ride to/from MCO ? or is it simpler to just go to the taxi stand when ready?

Waiting for a prepaid town car is a pill! I booked one once and waited at the airport for an hour for them to arrive! NOT how I want to start a vacation. You can wait on a DME bus for a long time too....last time we waited in ln for 20 minutes and then 45 minutes sat on the bus before pulling out at last. The driver felt sorry for us and dropped us off first instead of last because we were waiting so long, but it was still a very long wait.

Am I crazy to think that a taxi might be the best way to go? Anything that I am not thinking of? I have taken a taxi from the resort back to MCO, but it is rare that we take anything other than DME to the resort.

Thank you for any help/recommendations!

Getting a cab should be easy. Depending on where you're staying, you can just go out to Valet and they will get you a cab. Otherwise, ask at the front desk...they can tell you the best way to get a cab immediately.
Having to wait for an hour, for a prearranged car service, is unforgivable. Did the driver offer any explanation? They should be there, ready and waiting for you. When picking up at a resort, heading back to MCO, I've always had them arrive early!!
As for the wait times with DME....those that wait the longest in the bus line, tend to wait the longest on the bus. Why? Because you'll be the first on the bus, and have to wait for others to board. The shortest times I've had with DME are when I'm one of the last to board, so the bus leaves almost immediately!!

I would use a town car before a taxi as I want to know the price up front and take advantage of the free 30 minute grocery stop! Having used a town car over two dozen times I have never waited for the driver as they are always at the bottom of the escalator by the baggage claim waiting for us.

Honestly though when I stay on property I always use DME and my trips average about 90 minutes from check in to resort. This is only about 30 minutes different from the town car and its free :)

Finally, yes its easy to grab a cab at the airport!

I would vote for the town car as well. have used them for numerous trips and they are always waiting for us at the baggage pick up area. As another poster stated they are almost always early and waiting for us at the hotel when we are ready to return back to the airport. Love them.
