Arriving Sunday (9/2) around 6pm....I'm thining DME won't be that backed up then, but if they wait for a bus to be full before you leave that could be bad also....which would be quicker/easier....taking a town car service or doing the DME?

Does anyone know if there is any chance the Haunted Mantion "might" open ahead of schedule? I have no reason to think it would but I think the opening day is the 12th...we leave the 7th....if not, there's always next time!:cool1:

paDISnut,

We are trying the Towncar service for the first time over DME. We have had go luck with DME but wanted to try something different for a change. Granted it is costing an extra $130(w/tip) for the towncar service verses free DME.

My wife and I have done the towncar and limo before...its very nice, convienient and quick....now with our 4yo son...he loves buses and i like the not having to deal with the bags....i'm leaning toward towncar to disney and DME going back, depending on how early they make you go before your flight compared to the lead time on a town car....but if I get responses that the DME gets you from the airport to the resort quickly most times I could change my mind....Thanks! :wizard:

When using the DME to go to the resort, you will not get your luggage right away. So, pack a few things in your carry-on that you might want when you get to your room. Since you mentioned you are traveling with a 4yo, you might to pack extra undees and clothing, for those accidents.:thumbsup2

If you are solely concerned about timing, nothing beats one of the town car services. They are waiting there for you, put your luggage into the car, and whisk you away.

It is definitely the way to go. However, with tax and tip, it was nearly $75. We took it last November because our trip started the night before at my wife's hotel (for business purposes) that the kids and I just spent the night there before heading to Disney early the next morning. So, we weren't eligible for DME to start. We did take it on the return trip home.

I think nothing is more sad than riding DME back to the airport at dusk, knowing your trip is over and being reminded of it with the videos and disney theming, albeit sparse, of the busses.

The last time we used Mears (the old DME) was 1998. I have used a transportation service ever since. I think it is worth the $130 investment:
1. Eliminates the chance that DME will start the vacation off on a bad note
2. Use the free 30 minute shopping to get snacks and such (saves me more than $130 if same items were bought on-site!!)
3. No worries about return trip

I figure that I have already invested $$$$ in WDW, what's another $100.

PS - the kids get a really big kick out of a limo ride. makes them feel important!

The part of your post that I highlighted in bold is one of the best reasons to use a car service instead of DME. Your kids think the limo is cool, and that alone is probably worth the price.

But I take exception to your assumption that DME has a higher likelihood of starting your trip off on a bad note than a car service would. Since you've never used DME, you can't speak from experience.

DME is run completely differently than the old Mears service was. Disney sets all of the policies and procedures for DME, and Disney is known for excellent customer service. Mears does NOT have a good reputation for that. So even though Mears owns the DME buses and Mears employs the drivers, it's all done with Disney running the show, so things are VERY different than they used to be ... and I speak from experience.

Just as there is a sprinkling of bad DME experiences in board posts, there's also a sprinkling of bad car service experiences in board posts. The complaints pretty much cancel each other out -- problems are the rare exception, but they occur in both modes of transportation, not just DME.

As for saving money, I always get a grocery delivery. EVen if I rented a car or used a car service, I'd opt for the grocery delivery over the grocery stop. I've done grocery stops in rental cars on numerous vacations elsewhere, and each time I always wished I could have ordered the stuff ahead of time and had it delivered to my hotel. I'm just not a fan of navigating a strange grocery store and then waiting in line, when I know I can have the stuff waiting for me. I'm also not a fan of delaying myself rather than just getting to my hotel already.

Okay, forget the grocery delivery thing ... let's say you DID buy your grocery needs at your resort gift shop. Honestly, I don't mean to argue, but are you honestly saying that Disney marks up items so high that you would spend at least $130 MORE at a resort gift shop than at Publix??? In other words, you are saying that, for example, when you stop at Publix you buy about $65 or $70 worth of groceries, and that each comparable grocery item would cost 3 times as much at your resort gift shop??? Because the bill at the gift shop would have to be about $200 for you to SAVE $130 compared with buying off-site. You're saying, for example, that Disney resort gift shops charge $9 for a half gallon of milk instead of $3 at a supermarket ... or that a $2.49 bag of Doritos goes for $7 at a resort gift shop ??? :confused3 Maybe you just made a typo, I don't know ....

You didn't mention whether you thought using a car service with a grocery stop would get you to your resort faster than DME (maybe that's one of the things you were alluding to about a "bad start" to the vacation?). If you are thinking that, I can't agree with it. A car service without a grocery stop should get you to your resort in about the same time as DME. The trade-off with DME is not having to wait at baggage claim. If you add a 30-minute grocery stop to the car ride, I can't imagine that even on a bad day that your limo would beat other people on your plane to your resort.

So in ending, I'm not saying you should try DME. I think it's cool that you found something your kids and you like so much, and it's cool that you can afford to spend money on something that makes you happy. I'm just commenting on your negative view of DME even though you've never tried it, and your assertion that you SAVE $130 by making a grocery stop, implying that Disney's resort gift shop prices are about 3 times that of area supermarkets.

I respectfully disagree wth your statement.

Unless you have only carry-ons, a car service and DME should get you to your resort in about the same time. Sure, DME people will wait for a bus to leave and not be immediately whisked away. But car service people have to wait at baggage claim. WIth a car service, there is also at least a couple or 5 minute lag while the driver retrieves the car from the garage. Unless things have changed in the past couple months, it's not like they can meet you at baggage claim and have the car already at the curb waiting for you at the same time. It's at least a few minutes for them to come for you.

I've timed my DME experiences, from deplaning to drop-off. My first time it was 63 minutes airplane to CBR, and my second time it was 56 minutes airplane to POFQ. I can't imagine that a car service can substantially beat 56 minutes. Five minute walk/ride to baggage claim, 15 minute wait there, 5 minute wait to get and load the car, 25-30 minute drive to resort. That's 50 or 55 minutes. It took me 1 minute more than that. Any decent delay at baggage claim for you will mean I got to the resort before you did.

Personally, I recommend car services if people want a private ride, and personalized service ... DME can't offer either one. If you desire wither one of those, or if you desire the pampering factor or the "cool" factor, then a car service is the very best choice. But I can't recommend a car service over DME based solely on speed in getting to the resort.

I have used DME 3x and towncars many times prior to DME and my preference is now DME.

Because of the ability to skip baggage claim my 3 trips via DME got us to the resort quicker than with a towncar, even when we didn't have a grocery stop.

With DME I pack a few essentials in a carryon and then tag all the other bags for the resort. Land at MCO and head to the check in, board the bus and off to the resort. I think no luggage clam is a wonderful thing! Our average time is about 60-70 minues from touchdown to resort with DME. The bus was very comfortable and nicely a/c and the kids liked the movies.

OTOH with a towncar you wait for your luggage, meet your driver and then wait for him/her to pull the car around to where you can board. Our quickest trip via towncar without a grocery stop was 90 minutes from touchdown. I have also had varying success with TC drivers and the conditions of the cars. I must say though that Tiffany was always great.

Last trip we landed at MCO at 9:15 in the am and by 10:45 we were checked in and at the POFQ pool. About 1ish our room was ready and our checked bags and groceries from wegoshop were waiting in the room - sweet :)

Looking to truely enjoy every moment possible in the World...I just got my luggage tags for DME....can't I send my bags through them and take a car service to my resort? Do I have to travel on the bus with my bags...they don't arrive at the same time....my only concern with taking a bus on a sunday late afternoon is that there may not be lots of people comming in that late and the bus may make several stops before my resort CBR...or wait for a while before leaving to get full....if i knew the bus was going to be "timely" I wouldn't be worrying....but to add to my worries I was able to get a 9:15 HDDR show for Sunday...I didn't realy want to do this the day we got in...and still might not...but I can not get an opening for Thursday the only other day we could catch the show....so I don't want to miss it while on a bus! Of course I may just be overthinking things cause I CAN"T WAIT TO GO!

Just so you know, the DME policy is that once the first guest boards the bus it must pull away after no more than 15 minutes. The bus is specifically NOT supposed to wait around until full (one of the ways that DME is very different from the old Mears set-up).

It's been reported on the board that what you are proposing has been done. Even though it goes against Disney's publicly-advertised rules, people have used the system in this way.

The only thing that could fall through the cracks is that because you won't be checking-in at the Disney Welcome Center at the airport, DME won't be expecting your luggage. This is not a problem under normal circumstances, but if your luggage is lost or delayed before it gets to DIsney's custody, DME won't know to go looking for it, as they would if you had checked in and rode the bus.

Eric,
I appreciate your love of DME. You are correct in that I never have used the service, so I can't say nor did I say that it was bad. I have read and heard many stories of people having problems with Mears/DME. I was just trying to give some info about the advantages I see in using a car service.

I have used a car service (the same car service 6x) and have never, ever had any problems. In fact, in 2005 they saved our vacation when I left my son's medicine on the table at home. I used the 20 minutes, and my cell phone to have it re-filled in FL at CVS. Could DME have done that? No.. but I am not debating how good/bad DME is. I am only saying that I enjoy the car service and would recommend it for those reasons above.

As for the price difference between the grocery store and the hotel shop...I can tell you that a bottle of water in Disney is $2, making a case $24. At Publix the same water is about $6. This is one example, but I'm sure there are others if I were to research it better.

PS - I also rent a microwave from the car service to make breakfast and after-park snacks.
