I'll start by admitting I'm the biggest chicken-you-know-what when it comes to rides with drops, high speeds, etc. That said, I've promised myself and my friend that I WILL try Tower of Terror at least once. My questions are:

1) How bad are the drops? (Really, FOR REAL, how bad are they on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being horrific?)

2) But most importantly... when do they take the pic? If I'm going to freak myself out and get a migraine over this, I at least want to get a decent picture out of it. :rotfl2: (I *think* I'm kidding about the migraine.)

Mahalo!

In my opinion, I'd give the drop about a 6.
But that's comparing to say for example Great America's Drop Zone, whrere you REALLY feel that jump in your stomach.

It goes up and down a few times, and the final drop is the big one.

They take the picture RIGHT at the top, the doors open and you can see the beautiful view of CA before.... PLOP.

It's a fun ride :). Don't be afraid!

Thanks, TheAXIOM! Funny, my 70-year-old mom gave it a 6, too; while my dad gave it a 10. I think he's more of a chicken than me. Well, at least they don't take the pic in mid-PLOP (love that word!). Just watching "Twilight Zone" on TV at night creeps me out, so this should be fun.

I'd give it an 11. I pretty much hate that ride. I've been on it twice at DCA and once at WDW. I didn't like it at all. But it's one of my husbands favorites.

I don't like the feeling of falling. I also don't like not knowing exactly when the drop is or how long it will be. I think that's probably the worst part. When you're at the top, they open the door and then the car (or whatever you want to call it) kind of bounces a few times and then it drops you. Then you go back up and it drops you more.

Basically, I don't care for it. I'm always shaking when it's over.

That being said...it's worth it to try it at least once (unless you have a heart condition or something.) Who knows...maybe you'll like it. A lot of people do. But I am one of those who does not like it.

JaneJetson - thanks for your opinion too. I have the strongest feeling that I'll be like you. My niece made me go on Screamin' with her. By the time I got off, I could barely walk, had a REAL migraine, and the most I could handle for the next couple of hours was Heimlich's Chew Chew Train (and even that was pushing it a bit). But, I shall be a big girl and give it a try.

I freaked out the first time I went on Screamin'. There was no line so I didn't have time to chicken out. As soon as I got the harness on I started to panic and I wanted off. But the ride started. I was almost crying. I screamed out of pure terror the whole time.

However...after it was over...I decided I wanted to try it again. And now...I love it!

I keep thinking maybe I'll start liking ToT...but so far, I haven't.

Aww I loved Screamin' :confused3
Never plan a Disney trip without at least 3 hops in there :wizard:

I guess I'm just one of those thrill-seeker types!

You know, I love Screamin'. I giggle like a lunatic all the way through the ride, every time. However, ToT is right on the edge between fun scary and not-fun scary, leaning toward the not-fun side. I don't know what it is, I've ridden it several times and it just makes me apprehensive.

The last time I rode it I screamed so loud that I was literally hoarse for a week afterward.

I also have a friend who thought it was a straight drop- up, down, done. She didn't find out she was wrong until the car started going back up on the ride. The picture of our car shows her clinging to the man next to her, who was a complete stranger. She was sick for the rest of the day and didn't ride anything else for the rest of the trip.

That said, I think you should try it once, and see if you like it. You might surprise yourself. My three year old (she's five now) went on it twice, so it can't be THAT bad.

I love ToT. However, I also get creeped out by Twilight Zone. The hard part for me is the theming and the movie bit. It is the same way for my 12 year old. We both get a little freaked out by it before the ride starts. Then, I totally love the ride. But, he hasn't been on it since he was 10! :confused3 He thinks he might go on it in Dec., though.

My dad totally loves the ride, too. He was totally scared and my mom won't even try it. Although, we may convince her to try it once this next time. She is a total Screamin' convert now!

Ooh... okay you guys. I'll do it! And I'll try not to psych myself out beforehand, which is what usually makes me sick in the first place. First time I went on Space Mountain, the music sounded strangely like the Batman theme, so my sister and I yelled out "na na na na.... BATMAN!" through the whole thing so we wouldn't puke. :scared1:

I'll have to try it at least once. I mean, jeez, my friends are pushing 50 and they have no problems with these things. I'm a wee lass of 40, so no excuses.

Mahalo!

Hello, Fellow "Chicken-you-know-what!"

I do not like coasters that go upside down and am not fond of drops. I was with a friend and his wife who said, "Next, Tower of Terror." We got to the attraction and I said, "Meet you guys at the exit when you're out. Have fun!" Said friend stared at me in disbelief...

Friend: You're not riding?
Me: Uh, no.
Friend: You're kidding, right?
Me: Uh, no. Have fun, see you at the exit.
Friend: It's just a few drops. Come on.
Me: I'm not riding. Enjoy!
Friend: (and I quote) Are you really going to let me have this to remind you of for the rest of your life? That you didn't ride Tower of Terror."
Me: You are going to - forever - aren't you?
Friend: Yep. Come on. You can sit in the middle.

We went on it. I am here to tell you that I will NEVER, and I mean NEVER EVER EVER step foot on that ride again. Just seeing it from the parking lot sends my system into a slight panic. I had to sit for at least 20 minutes when we got off. It was just plain awful. Drop after drop after drop. And I can assure you - there were some VERY not Disneyesque words coming from my mouth after the 3rd drop.

If you don't like drops - it's awful.

You wanted the truth. There you have it.

- Dreams :wizard:

P.S. The picture has everyone smiling and my mouth is wide open (screaming I am sure), but actually looks like I am happy with the rest of the gang.

P.S.S Said friend and I are no longer in contact due to other reasons. Ironic, huh? LOL, but at least I did it.

My largest concern was regarding the landings, are they soft? or hard, or what have you? so before entering the ride itself, I asked one of the CM's, and he assured me that the landing is soft, and fortunately he was correct, however what I was not prepared for at all, was the part where as you are dropping, was that I ended up feeling light headed, and as if my stomach was trying to come out of my mouth, now, with the first drop, no problem, however with each sequential drop, that is when I began to feel that way, and then it became a bit worse. After, what would end up being the final drop thank god! I was looking around thinking, I am not feeling good at this point, and want to get the hell out of here, but alas not possible, just no way, at that point, but again, thank god, the ride was over, when I got off, I felt a bit dizzy, just a tad bit, however, because the way the ride ended up making me feel, by the time it had ended, no thank you to going on it again any time soon, if every again,it took a while for me to feel normal again. Matter of fact, I am getting a headache just thinking about it. ugh! I love the decor of the que line, and visiting the library, and the rest of the line that leads to the ride, however, that will be as far as I go most likely for awhile anyway, for I will just leave via the "chicken" door, now believe you me, I am not afraid of the ride, I just do not care to feel like that ever again!

Gisele,

Just go for it!! I was totally terrified my first time, but after my first ride, it became one of my favorite rides in DCA! It's a little bouncy, but IMHO not as bad as Space Mountain, that ride gives me a migraine.

What you all are missing Is the Hang Time.:wizard: That is the fun part!! :wizard: As you go down you fly up. As you go up you are pressed down into you seat.
[as in the nasa training plane where the guy feels weightless]

I love that weightless feeling!! It is the fun part!! The higher you come off your seat it is more fun! :wizard:

I always manage to have a hat or a scarve that flys up too!!

A lady had a quarter in her hand that flew up and it was caught in the pic one time!

have to admit the hardest thing about the drops is they seem a bit random, so not just up and down, and it is dark, so I actually think the drops are relatively mild, it is just the unknown that makes it kinda scary. The picture is on about the 2nd set of set ups and downs right when you get to the top, you'll hold for a second and te flash will go

When I was a teenager I used to go to Great America alot. They had a ride called The Edge that just dropped straight down. I tried it once and hated it. Didn't feel sick or anything, I just didn't like dropping that much.

So when I tried TOT I thought it would be the same. I thought it was better because it was up and down and most of the drops are short. I think there might be one long one, but it didn't seem as long as The Edge. Anyway, I like it. It isn't my favorite ride at DLR but I'll ride it a time or two.

My dad likes it and one of my boys hates it and won't ride it again.

The drops are random. It is never exactly the same. I have been on it about 6-7 times and am terrified getting on each time, but for some reason keep doing it. It could be my 6 year old wanting to do it and if she can, I certainly should be able to. Because the drops are never quite the same, some have been scarier than others.

I am a big chicken**** but I am better off than a couple of my friends, who won't even go on POTC or Star Tours now! We all have our ride quirks. I have been on all the 'Mountain' rides (minus anything in DCA) when I was much younger just to try them, and that was all I needed. I don't need to keep going on Mountain rides, because I am simply not a thrill ride kind of girl, though I do love Star Tours, if that is considered a thrill ride. These days, I don't need to try every single ride in the parks because I already know what I will and won't take to and be comfortable with, and ToT is NOT for me. It is not even on my radar. Not even a temptation for me. Can't handle those drops and my whole family has a history of heart problems so I am not taking any chances! I will let others take on the ToT. Although...one of my more brave friends was telling me recently that she went on ToT and "It was mortifying..." So, keep that in mind - the people who really love big thrill rides will likely think the drops are not that bad and the ones who are uneasy with them will find it very jarring, I think.

I DO love Twilight Zone, the series, so I would love to go in and see the inside of the 'hotel.'
