Tower of Terror 10 Miler 2014

I am so worried about the weather!!!!

I am northern girl & don't do so well in the hot/humid conditions. I am forcing myself out in the heat of summer here to get some 'weather' condition training in! Least the sun won't be out which will add to the draining feeling!!!

Drama? What? :) I'm doing ToT with my hubby and SIL. But PHM with women. I don't want no drama.. just lots of cupcakes! And alcohol...with maybe some running thrown in there! :rotfl2: I am a slow runner too. 12/13 mile on a good day here too!! I am also doing the 5K.
Hmmm maybe that was the problem. Not enough alcohol and cupcakes... Lol. It was my second year with that group and it was bad the year before, so I really should have known.

I am a bit nervous about the two races in one day, but I feel like I have enough time to train between now and then.

I am going to take it easy on the 5K- stop at characters- slow run/walk... to conserve that energy for the 10 miler!!!

I am trying to picture it in my head... Is the incline similar to the ones at PHM? If so they weren't too bad. Pretty steady climbs not a straight uphill.

We're heading to WDW in April. I think I may drive the course areas that I can.

They're like a typical overpass - a long hill, which is why I called it "big", but not super steep. I do think they're the biggest hills of any WDW race, but I could be mistaken. There's two, one to cross over World Drive and the other to cross over Buena Vista Drive.

I found their elevation once. I should try again. N/M.. here: http://www.wdwforgrownups.com/sites/default/files/images/tot_elevation.jpg

You can get a decent idea by doing google street view, especially since you've been to Disney before.

Hi all - just chiming in to say I signed up this afternoon! I am going to work in EPCOT, UK pavilion from July 2014 - July 2015 and thought it would be a great opportunity to run a Disney race, something I have always wanted to try.

I've had to pull out of doing the Edinburgh marathon this year (would have been my second time) because of a long-term injury and likely a form of arthritis which I am waiting to be diagnosed with, at the grand old age of 21! However, I've been told it shouldn't affect my active lifestyle - so thought I'd celebrate by signing up to the ToT 10 Miler!

This will be my first runDisney event; although I have run a marathon and a couple of half marathons in the UK. This will be my first time running an event in humidity - not looking forward to that aspect!

Will also hopefully be running the Marathon in January and the Princess Half in February.

Hope everyone's training goes well and injury-free!

Definitely. I live in Florida (and lived in Atlanta before that), so I know about the weather sucking your energy, even when doing something low impact. People misjudge humidity.
Oh heck, forget all that I said - as a Floridian and former Atlantan, you could easily PR this one! No worries; you already know more than you'd like to know about dealing with humidity, I'll bet! :thumbsup2

The words of caution are always appreciated though, as sometimes I'm too hard on myself, and have to remind myself environment plays a huge role.
Yep, I do the same thing - it's why I started recording weather conditions for my training runs... it's a lot easier to feel good about a really, really tough-feeling run with a slow pace when I see that it was a feels-like temp over 100 and 98% humidity.

ETA: I just remembered something very, very important. TofT has those two huge overpasses on Osceola. Those are big hills. Need to keep it slow the first mile, or I'll never make it up those hills!
Oddly enough, I don't find them to be all that bad. I swear the overpasses in the WDW Half and PHM are either longer or steeper; they seem to go on forever, while the TOT cloverleaf (same one twice) seems to go by pretty quickly. I'd say its worst attribute is really the steep camber - I feel it laterally in my ankles and hips. But again, it's over pretty quickly.

So I thanks everyone on these boards for their motivation and inspiration. Intervals got me back out there and it can only get better, hopefully :)
Absolutely - you've got this! :cheer2:

I was thinking of running intervals as well. I was concerned I might look stupid doing it, as I am new to this I just assumed everyone would be easily running this whole race and I'd be sucking wind like a Hoover vacuum as people flew right by me.
Not at all - I'd hazard to say the majority of folks at this event do some form of intervals and many, many walk all of it. You'll be in such good company, it's quite likely you'll get confused by all of the different interval timers going on around you!

This is a great suggestion! Last year, I was pretty tapped toward the end. Upright and able to still go to the bash... but my splits really reflected how much my energy was sucked from me.
Hi AnnMarie! Can you believe we're tackling this beast AGAIN??? :faint: :rotfl:

That's where I wound up last year - upright, but totally sapped. I PRd by a lot, and I don't regret it, but this year will be all about the fun and none about the time!

For no good reason I can come up with, I'm convinced the TOT cloverleaf is more comfortable than the PHM overpasses. Maybe it's just being in the dark and not being to see much of it?! :rotfl2: IDK, but they just don't seem to bother me as much.

Least the sun won't be out which will add to the draining feeling!!!
:thumbsup2 Exactly!

I'm not saying running in the humid summer is fun down here, but working in EP all summer, you'll be very well acclimated - that'll make it much easier! Just remember to go by feel, especially in those first few weeks after you arrive - go by perceived effort more than actual speed and back off if you start feeling badly.

Nothing can be as humid as PHM was this year! I swear I was covered in sweat before I even crossed the starting line. I am sure TOT will be similar and maybe a bit warmer. I would say be sure we all start hydrating a few days before. I would rather need to make a potty stop than pass out from heat stroke.

I know, right?! I enjoy it though.. it is a unique race for sure. I just wish that the heat and humidity would be a bit nicer this year.

::yes:: I PR'd by a lot too this past year, but it wasn't easy! I still will want to better my time if even by a minute this year... but yeah, I am hoping for more fun since I will again get to run with someone this year.:cool1:

That's the hope! I made the mistake of going for a run at 11am during July in 2012 because 'it didn't look that warm outside'. I vowed that I was never going to do that again!

I finished ToT last year soaked in sweat and more drained than any half marathon or full marathon I've done.I did the 2013 Disney full where highs reached around 83-84 which was warm but even that race just didn't have the humidity of early October which is still pretty horrible and I finished that full in way better condition that the ToT 10 miler, humidity can zap you!!!I also realized that if I spent most of the day walking around the parks in the heat and humidity your body is already in that sweaty mode so going out for a 10 mile run at 10pm just finishes you off,I mean I walked over from Epcot for the race that walk right there is like almost 2 miles right before the race.I have no plans to do anything different this year like sleeping in the middle of the day
so all I can do is hope for a early cool front and hydrate.

Glad to see so many 12/13 mm runners. It makes me feel a lot better. I'm at 13 right now, hope to get down to 12 or so for TofT. I'm sure I'll be able to run the first 1/2 fairly well, but the second half will probably become a power walk. There's a pic of the "I Did It" shirt from last year here: http://onceuponarunfairytale.blogspot.com/2013/12/tower-of-terror-10-miler-expo.html

Thank you, I love em! Do they only have long sleeve? Do you think there will be plenty the first day of the expo! Thanks again!

Speaking of sweat...

Do they have changing tents or something after the race?
There's no way I can enjoy an after party drenched in sweat.

I'm not talking about a shower or anything. Just a place to change clothes.

Hey guys!

In response to some of the concerns over the Run Disney discounted tickets and the use of FP+, I found this answer on the Mom's Panel:

https://disneyworldforum.disney.go.com/questions.aspx?sort=&page=1&qid=251196&pid=182&cid=183

So I called Run Disney and the lady told me that once I pay IN FULL, I need to call Run Disney and request that my tickets be mailed to my house. Then, I can link them to MDE myself and book fast passes at 60 days.

So, for those of us who bought the Run Disney package, we need to pay in full well before 60 days so that we actually have our tickets to link if we want to book our fast passes 60 days out. That may be overkill anyway, but I like to have my options open :)

Just passing along the info :)

Should be plenty of everything the first day - this isn't one that draws the crazy crowds of a Princess or Marathon weekend. I'm going back to 2012, but I got a short-sleeve I Did It! tee then, and there was at least one long-sleeve version, too.

There is a changing tent... but if your goal is to not be drenched, DON'T USE IT! Seriously, I came out hotter and sweatier than I went in. Use an air-conditioned restroom instead. Trust V. :)

V is good. V is wise.
Thank you.

Restroom it is.

AWESOME NEWS!!! Thank you for getting this info!!! :cheer2:

:rotfl: I wish I could say my advice comes from wisdom... sadly it comes form doing the exact opposite of the advice I'd been given! 2012, I used a restroom and my friend used the changing tent. 2013 my friend warned me against the changing tent, said my restroom idea was MUCH better, but the tent was closer, so I went for it. UGH! So, really, my advice is don't be 2013 V. ;)

Thanks everyone for the advice on both the changing tents and the tickets through Run Disney! I was wondering about how to use thosetickets in conjunction with FP+ so this really helps :) I was planning on having my husband (non-runner) bring some wipes when he meets me after the race so I can at least freshen up a bit for the party. Now I know to have him bring me extra clothes as well.

I think I'm going to just run around giving everyone near me gigantic sweaty hugs. That sounds like a villianous thing to do... and this IS a Villians race right? Hahahahahaha!

(Kidding, of course!) I promise no random stranger will get a sweaty hug from me!!!
