Tower of Terror 10 Miler 2014

Hi all! Getting very excited about this race. It will be 3rd RD Event but my 1st TOT! We are staying at POFQ which I know is a host resort so will provide transportation to the Expo. We should be arriving on property around 10 am on Friday so I was thinking we would go directly to POFQ to see about checking in and then take the bus transportation to the Expo. I wanted to go to DTD after the Expo to grab some lunch and take a look around then take the boat back to POFQ. Is this possible, is there transportation from WWoS to DTD or should we just drive ourselves to then Expo and on to DTD?

I don't think there is transportation to DTD. I think SSR is a host resort, so you could take an expo bus there and walk over to DTD from there, but I would think it would be easier just to drive.
(Based on my knowledge from PHM weekend anyways....this will also be my first ToT so hopefully somebody can correct me if I'm wrong!)

Since I would not trust the parking situation at DTD I would ride back to your resort or another DTD resort and take Disney transport

I have also taken my measurements. My belly has gone down an inch in the last 2 months. None of my other measurements have changed at all since I began. however, my arms and legs are much more toned so I am guessing the fat has been replaced by muscle and that's the reason for no changes anywhere else.

Basically, all my fat is around my midsection and no matter how hard I work it doesn't seem to be disappearing like it should. My doctor has taken all the tests needed and just tells me to keep working hard.

This is rare for me, but I agree with the doctor in this case.

Although I'm at goal (well, between you and me I'm a little bit above my goal, but that's OK, I know why) and maintaining, I'm still carrying more in the midsection than I would like. As I"ve continued to do cardio and weight training, slowly slowly slowly (and have I mentioned slowly?) my middle has started whittling down. But it's seriously SLOW. I started WW in Feb 2012, made goal weight in November 2013, and it's still not how I want it to look, but in the last year there has been significant progress. Slow slow slow.

So yep, just keep doing what you're doing.

I analyze the crap out of everything so I have taken a close look at everything. I lost 20 lbs in the first 2 months I started this new diet and exercise. So, my clothes are fitting much looser since then. But, since the first 20 lbs lost they fit no different.

My scale I do my monthly weigh-ins on also measures body fat %, visceral fat, skeletal muscle, BMI, and resting metabolism. None of those have really changed in the last 2 months.

I didn't expect to keep losing 10 lbs a month but I would have been happy with 4 lbs a month, or a pound a week. Instead I gained 4 last month and lost 2 this month. Makes no sense!!!! :confused3:confused3

My only thought was whether you were drinking enough water? But otherwise - my experience is similar in that belly and **** weight is hardest/last to go...have you been toning your abs with crunches and what not? Maybe you need to get the stomach muscles in line with your plan?

We totally rocked the 10k, for us. We crossed the finish line together with a time of 1:05:25. A 10:33 pace. They added a killer group of hills on the course or we could have been under 1 hour. Now to stretch the runs to closer to the 10 mile mark.

Great job! Congratulations!!!

Waiting2goback.... a few ideas. What all are you doing for exercise? When I started trying to lose my extra weight I was focusing on just riding the bike, I wouldn't run to save my life, but at 365 lbs, my knees wouldn't let me run. Then my wife, who started at over 250 did a bunch of reading and we realized that we needed to do both cardiovascular and strength training. Since then, we are both down over 160 pounds. Would never have happened without both strength training as well as the cardio training. Since muscle is more dense than fat we currently are not losing weight, but are still changing body composition. My point is look at the variety of what you are doing. Strength training is at least as important as the cardio training when it comes to dropping pounds.

As for recovery, immediately after leaving the gym, I drink either a CORE POWER drink or a shake from my powder I have. I also drink BCAA the day after lifting to help recouperation as well as during my lifting session to jump start that muscle repair. Lots of protein and water/Powerade Zero.

RickFreeze: First, great job on the 10K. I hope you let us know what corral you are placed in once you hear back from rD? I am running mine on 6/1 so I will be curious to see how hard I need to push to move up.

Second, thanks for the response. I do P90X. Not sure if any of you have heard of it. Some people know what it is while others look at me like I have 2 heads when I mention it. Now that the weather is nicer I go for a bike ride on Sunday usually. Last Sunday I did just over 20 miles. Obviously I'm increasing the running. But, I do 3 days of strength training with P90X.

That's awesome you and your wife have lost so much and obviously you are running the ToT so no signs of stopping, that's great. I know my body is changing, but I am not adding enough muscle (according to my scale) to justify the lack of weight loss. And my BF% isn't changing all the much in the last couple of months. Believe me, if that stuff was changing I wouldn't care about the weight. I am currently 232 lbs. If I was that heavy but ripped, I wouldn't care. I'm not, I still have a 40" waist.

At this point all I can do is what I am doing. I know I am doing the right things. Just frustrating. Could it just be because I am 40 yrs old it will take that much longer? Eventhough I am fat I can still run 4 miles and not be dead for the day and last year I couldn't run a mile.

All I drink is water but because it has been so cold I am not as thirsty as usual so it could be that I am not drinking enough. P90X has an ab workout but I don't do it as often as I am supposed to. I know I should do it more but I workout during the baby's nap and I often can't fit it in during that time. I have to find a way to get it done though.

Where in MA are you from?

II was wondering what everyone else does for recovery because my muscles just don't seem to be recovering as quickly as they used to. I am doing the foam roller as well. I am really starting to pick up my training (I have to now that I signed up for my June 1st 10K). I just don't see how I will be ready to run every other day as my legs don't seem to recover that quickly???

I just found an article that addresses some of this stuff! The first thing for me that stood out was:

Tart Cherries: They contain antioxidants called anthocyanins, which research has shown reduce inflammation after a tough session, so you may feel less sore and bounce back faster. Drink the juice, bake with them, or spread a jam on whole-grain toast.

Most nights I've been having a frozen mix of cherries and various berries (with ice cream or greek yogurt). I have noticed that when I'm eating that consistently, I don't get sick as often as normal. And when I think about it, I am almost never overly sore, when I used to get sore with just normal workouts. Can't help but wonder if it's the cherries!

Link to the 6 page (you have to keep clicking through) article is here.

This also stood out for me:

HOW TO CROSS-TRAIN IF YOU'RE A...
Runner: Spin to boost your aerobic capacity, without added pounding on joints.

Because I started doing Spinning classes, and my lungs are getting better and I can really push myself like I haven't done since I was on a varsity sport in college!

Could it just be because I am 40 yrs old it will take that much longer? Eventhough I am fat I can still run 4 miles and not be dead for the day and last year I couldn't run a mile.

Many people have found that it takes longer the older you get. I myself am 44, and started WW again at 42. One of the women I met at WW dropped 100 in less than a year; she's in her 20s. While my losses felt pretty fast at the time, I dropped 84ish in just under 2 years. Age? Unwillingness to starve? Who knows. And as I mentioned, the midsection isn't as nice as I want it to be. So...time, continuing on.

Oh are you doing Pilates at all? I have the several years old Mari Winsor 20 minute Pilates workout, and it's as terrific now as it was when I first got it! Really firms you up from under the skin. (wish I could do it more often!)

Signed up for my qualifying 10k today! It was the BAA 10k so just waiting for confirmation of my acceptance! I want that medal soooo bad!

Does any of your previous ToT runners know if the medal is always the same with just the different date. I love the medal so hope it is!!

I am not a previous runner but from what I've read RunDisney keeps the medals the same (except date) for 5 years, I love the ToT medal also, that's why I wanted it to be my first RunDisney race.

I ran TOT last year and the medal was pretty much the same as in previous years.I know 2 years ago the ribbon was orange and last year it was red, black and yellow with Stitch on it.The medal is way cool but you have to wonder if they're considering changing it as runners would like some variety. It's like this half marathon race series I ran in,I like the medal but after seeing that the medals are all the same except for the location on the ribbon I'm reconsidering running the last race of the year,I'm probably going to do it as it's like a Goofy or Dopey challenge, you run 3 races in the series you get a special medal, you run 4 you get another medal,up to 5 races.

Just speaking from experience at the marathon weekend in January... We drove to expo and then back to resort because parking at DTD was REALLY bad. Then took transportation (boat) to DTD. So I think taking any RD bus to any of the host resorts (SSR, OKW, POR or POFQ) would be easy enough and then you could take a nice boat ride to DTD.

::yes:: Historically, that's been how they go - same design for 5 years, then a special anniversary design. I just saw a pic of this year's from the EEC expo - same as last years. but with a green ribbon.

Thank you guys for the responses! I think we will rely on RD Transportation and either walk to DTD from SSR or take RD Bus back to POFQ and take the boat from there.

Question for all of you previous TOT participants. What time did you board the bus at your resort to go to the start line? Can anyone tell me what the transportation is like from POFQ? The only experience I have is from PHM in 2013 from POR, we waited in line for a bus for 1 1/2 hours and had to run to our corral. It caused a bit of pre-race stress.

Also, what time should spectators catch a bus to be DHS when the after party opens?

TIA!
