Surely people who live in a town have more options than ‘like it, or leave’? Finding the right balance between tourists and residents isn’t easy but it’s better than letting the place turn into a theme park.
Venice already charges people who stay overnight and now they’re extending that to people who visit for the day. Everyone who visits, no matter how they get there will cause wear and tear on the city so I’m happy for there to be a charge. And I’d fully support a daily quota for visitors too.
