SO - I signed up for touringplans.com and they're really recommending Harry Potter at the end of the day ( probably Jul 28th and no early entry/front of line passes) - but reading around here it sounds like we should get there before opening and dash straight there, maybe even to Ollivander's first.

So - given it's the highest priority of the day what would should we do?

We did both. We went at opening and then back towards the end of the day. We found that Olivander's and FJ lines were much shorter in the evening but Flight of the Hippogriff was much longer.

We were there in July last year and it was busy busy.

We found later in the day to be much better time to do FJ......barely a queue at all. By the time you get in on the morning it will already be busy.

We wandered in to IOA around 5.30 a couple of times and there were masses of people heading out of the HP area as we were heading in.

I would leave it till later in the day for both of them.

We go at the end of the day. It is already busy at park opening due to the early entry

I think the reason we do both is that we have seen the ride go down for techinical problems in the evening and missed out riding it then ( and we stayed onsite for 5 days) but there is always that risk and if it is a one day trip , it would be a HUGE bummer..I would do both personally

I would do both too, especially if WWoHP was my priority. You could get it in first thing just to make sure you do see it, then go back at night when it is even more magical to see and do it again.

Wish we were going soon...

Another vote for doing both. We always start AND end our day at WWOHP when we're vacationing at Uni. :)

Even if you decide to start the day at Forbidden Journey make sure to at least go back to the area after dark. Actually if you are spending multiple days at Universal and have park hopping, I would spend the first day at the Studios, then go over to Harry Potter World for the first time after dark. There is no way to describe just how amazing and magical it is to walk through the area to the castle just as its getting really dark (extra points, if its a really cloudy night).
