Latest Update: Time now, 9:12 p.m., Friday evening
We now have four IT professionals working on this problem. They are very impressed with the measures this person or persons took to keep me offline. Of course,
they're impressed because this is their world and they're into stuff like that ...
I have been assured again that our TGM database is completely intact and does not appear to have been accessed in any way. From what I can gather, they're simply being very thorough to ensure we don't have any service hiccups once we're back online.
We're currently preparing a completely new format for TGM called "TourGuideMiKE's Vacation Itinerary Planner" (TGM's V.I.P. --
get it?) that will appeal to a larger mass audience, so ... looking at this from a silver lining angle ... I'm glad this happened now instead of later. That's not making light of my frustrated guests, however.
My last phone call a few minutes ago indicated that there's no reason why we shouldn't be back online by this evening. They're just being very careful with the backup and reinstall.
Someone posted, "Why didn't they just move you to a different server?" a while back. It's basically because we own our own server; we don't lease or rent a shared server with other web sites. We did when we first opened, of course, but took this more-expensive-than-you-might-believe step about a year ago to,
ironically, ensure the best experience for my guests. The next step coming is to have two servers that work in tandem with each other, and one could be used on its own for emergencies like this one. Our IT guys are actually setting us up with a rented-type backup server situation so that this doesn't happen again. The new security settings should keep us very safe, regardless. Still, where there's a will, there's a way, especially in the internet world.
We can't tell if this is a random act of sabotage from someone who wanted the challenge or if it's simply someone with a strong dislike for me personally. I'd like to think it's the former as I'm not aware of any enemies I have made through the years (
I say half kidding and half not ...) because I'm usually a pretty nice person. Regardless, both my guests and I will be better because of it once we're back up and available.
I promise to keep everyone informed of our progress.
Patiently waiting,
Mike Hewell
