Google “anchorage crime rate.” It’s not pretty. Property crime has been skyrocketing. It’s also terrible for assault, etc. Large homeless population (really all over town, but worst downtown in/near the touristy areas (not uncommon to see open drug use in town square). Growing up, we knew which neighborhoods not to go into. Now that’s not really true, it’s all over.
From KTVA, a local news station (Jan 2018): “By examining the FBI's 2016 Uniform Crime Report, which was released this week, the report found that Alaska is the most dangerous state in America, and concluded that Anchorage is the state's most dangerous city.”
There also really isn’t much to do there. Better to head North to Denali, and/or South for fishing/sightseeing.
