TOTALLY OT: Longevity Gift From Employer

Good for you for going with the sunglasses!

I had never paid more than $10 for sunglasses. I was the worst at scratching/breaking/dropping/kicking/losing them. This year I didn't need to use my vision insurance for contacts so I got a pair of Ray Bans and all I had to pay was the tax on a $110 pair. I LOVE them! I got a good case & I'm trying to be very careful with them.

This is how I got my first pair of MJ's. There was a loophole in DH's vision insurance and we were able to get sunglasses with no copay (even though we don't need corrective lenses). Now, you have to actually have a prescription to get sunglasses, which is how it should be.

As far as longevity goes, my employer is spectacular! First, on our 5 year anniversary date, we get a bonus of 1% of our gross annual salary from the previous year. Most of us are paid hourly plus OT so that amount can vary. Then, every year after that, we get 1/4% added each year. We get the bonus check every year on our anniversary date. So, at 15 years, I got a bonus of 4.25% of last year's income. It caps out at 5% but we do get a COLA raise each year too. We also get the longevity gifts in 5-year increments as well. My bonus check comes in April and I like to use it for a F&W trip in the fall;)

I'm floored by a company that still gives longevity gifts.

For my 5 year anniversary, I got a link to a website with a list of gifts to choose from. Like the OP, I went back and forth between practical gifts and frivolous gifts. Sure enough, the frivolous gift won out - a $250 Dooney and Bourke purse. I've never had anything like it and I love it.

When my 10 year rolled around, I was very excited to see what the selection was. Needless to say, I was very disappointed to see that the selection had gone downhill in both quality and dollar amount. I ended up with a $50 Coach wristlet. I figure by the time my 15 year rolls around, I will be getting a toy from a Cracker Jack box :rotfl:

I ordered the sunglasses today:cool1:. I looked at the catalogs online for the 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 year gifts. It's funny because I can select another pair of MJ's in 5 years. Then, if I make it to 25 years, I can order the "his and hers" MJ's:lmao:. Basically, I need to take special care of the glasses for at least 5 years. Also, I can return them if I don't like them and exchange them for something else.

I hope you like them! Always nice to treat yourself.

I had a really nice pair of sunglasses for several years (Vuarnet) and lent them to my sister who did not know they were expensive and lost them. I've only had cheapo glasses since then as I can't seem to bring myself to pay over $150 for what I think I'd like now.

My DH also gets longevity gifts. The ones I remember are Binoculars and at 15yr we got a mantle clock. I really like that clock.

Here is a fun quiz: Without looking it up, does anyone know where the Maui Jim World Headquarters is located?

Answer: Peoria, IL

I know, it isn't the first place you thought of, is it. My sister works there, so I have a few pairs of MJ's and I just love them. I suffer from migraines, and I don't know what I ever did before I had the polarized Maui Jim sunglasses. OP, I hope you like your glasses when you get them!!

My glasses came in:banana:! They are so nice! I usually wear sunglasses that cost less than $20 so I can really appreciate how nice these are. They fit perfect, they look great and they feel really sturdy. I'm not sure about running in them. They are a little heavier than I am used to but maybe I just need to adjust.

Thanks to everyone who encouraged me to get them:goodvibes.

That's because the lenses are glass, not plastic.
