Totally off topic- but worth a read

So we are spending a few days at a little beach place on nsw mid nth coast called harrington and having a swim at crowdy head and notice the locals doing a 'mullet run' which involves running a speedboat with nets through the waves doing a big circle and coming back to shore. Tractors then pull the nets in to beach - same principal as a trawler- the nets are full of mullet and low and behold 2 sharks. A 6ft hammerhead and a 8ft grey nurse shark are then pulled out of the nets by their tails- these local professional fisherman are made of tough stuff !!!- and they get the first one out and off it went but when the bigger one was let out it went straight for the massive net full of fish ( a few tonnes at least) . Problem was there was a fisho in the way and he got bitten! Needless to say the Melbourne5 retreated from water very quickly and did not re enter. Anyhow rescue helicopter arrives 45m later and there are police/ ambos everywhere. As we make our way back to car park someone says look at that and right where we were swimming ( no more than 4ft deep) were the 2 sharks still swimming around looking for a feed. A surreal day. The fisho is fine apparently.

Wow that's crazy I've heard of shark attacks in knee deep water - just one reason why I'm not a beach person

Oh yes, they can and do.

We had a Staffy pup once and took her and our older dog to the beach for a swim next to a jetty. The tide was right out and we were just wandering along, chatting and watching the dogs when DH makes a dash for the water to scoop out the pup - there were small sharks following her along the shallows! They wouldn't have been grey nurses or anything, probably leopards or something similar, but still, they'd be big enough to take a pup easily and quickly.

Up here, it's the bull sharks that you have to watch out for; they compete for river and creek space with the crocodiles.

Gotta love Australia. Also another reason why I like walking along the beach - but swimming in freshwater creeks south of the croc line. Scary stuff!

It didn't end well, with many internal and external stitches and opening up and flushing the wound to keep infections at bay.

That phone call was priceless though "now don't be alarmed, but your brothers in hospital and he's been bitten by a crocodile"

Wow. Has any had any lasting health issues? If they don't clean out the wounds really well they can get infected nastily. Crocs have some of the nastiest bacteria in their mouths.
