My husband and I (both 25) and another couple (22 and 28) will be going to Disney World next year in October. I am in the early stages of planning and need all the help I can possibly get! I am looking at value resorts (1 room for each couple) but if we could get a discount at a value or moderate resort that would be great!! How do I find discounts this early in advance? How about dining discounts? When is the best time to book?? I don't know how early in advance to do anything???!!! Please, someone offer their expert advise :sad1:

First off, welcome to the DIS! You'll find it's a great wealth of information for all things Disney. :goodvibes

DH and I visited WDW last February with our best friends (who are also a couple) at Pop Century. We were budgeting as much as possible, and we ended up sharing a room. Now, I know some people prefer their privacy, but we're the type of people who only use their hotel room to catch some zzz's. So, it's a thought worth considering if you want to stay on-property really cheap!

You'll find that if you book a room-only reservation with Disney (no packages through Disney or another travel agency, such as Expedia) and a great discount code comes along (which you never know when that will happen or for what times of the year for that matter), you can apply that code to your ROOM-ONLY reservation. Like I said though, it's gotta be a room-only ressie!

My suggestion to you is to price things out on Disney's site, and then price it elsewhere to get a feel for how much everything runs. Sometimes Disney will run specials, such as the free dining meal plan, which will save you GREAT money but those offers are sporatically unveiled for the public. You never know when they're coming out or for what part of the year.

So, in my opinion, there's no perfect time to book. It all really depends on how saavy you are with Disney's special offers, and if you can snag one for October 2008.

HTH! I'm sure others will have great advice for you, too!

You're looking at the best place to find information about staying at WDW as cheaply as possible, "cheap" being a relative term when discussing WDW. ;)

Actually, I would recommend getting familiar with this site as much as possible to understand all the abbreviations/acronyms people use (it can be alphabet soup around here at times), and then go look at the Codes and Rates subforum under this resorts forum. That'll have some good info. Then look under the Dining Plan forum under Restaurants to get information on Dining, etc.

Welcome to the DIS. The good thing is that you have plenty of time before your vacation. What you should do is buy yourself "The 2008 Unofficial Guide To Walt Disney World".

Disney has been having a hard time filling all of their rooms. What they have been doing during slower times of the year is offer the dining plan FREE. Their is a good chance that this will be offered again. Most likely for travel around the end of August through September. Can you move your vacation ahead one month? It would save you hundreds of dollars in food costs.

Visit http://www.mousesavers.com/ for up to date information for discounts on all things Disney, plus car rentals etc. Sign up for the monthly newsletter.

Check in at the DIS boards often. Read the posts and ask plenty of questions. You'll get plenty of answers.

Thanks for the tip!
Yes, you could move our vacation, especially it it meant saving a lot of money. We were thinking October because hopefully it wouldn't be too hot and I want to see all of the Halloween decorations! I am from Texas, so I'm used to very hot summers...don't know how hot Florida is in September though??

Welcome :welcome: to the DIS. The first thing I would do is try to decide what days you want to go, then go to the Disney website and see if the type of rooms you want are available. You minght want to consider staying in a Family Suite at the All Star Music resort (they are usually a little cheaper than 2 standard rooms, and most are in a preferred location), so you will still have 2 rooms and 2 bathrooms, but you will also have a kitchenette, but be close together.

Now, if one of you has AAA you can see if there are any AAA rooms available at the resort of your choice if you want to book a room only, right now that is the only discount available so far, the other discounts won't come out until next year around August. There is no discount on dining unless someone in the party has an Annual Pass, then you are eligible for the Disney Dining Experience card which give you a 20% discount at most Disney restaurants.

Book as soon as you know when you want to go, the earlier the better, if you don't have AAA, you can still book a room, so that you have one just in case, and if a code becomes available, then you can switch it. I say switch it, because the code can't be applied to the room you have unless that type of room is available when the codes are released.

There is also the Disney Dining Plan, and there are 2 options that will be offered next year. I am using the basic plan which offers one Counter Service meal, one snack and one Table Service meal for each night of your stay, you can use those in any combination you want to. We only use this on our longer trips when we will be doing alot of Character meals. I don't find it comes in handy for short trips when we just want to eat and run. the Deluxe plan I don't really understand, because it won't work for my family and is too expensive.

I recommend getting a Passporter's Guide to Walt Disney World, this book has more than you need in info, plus place to write your plans, maps, and pockets for each day of your trip. The one for 2008 comes out next month. I would also recommend getting the new The Complete Walt Disney World, it tells alot more than some of the others and it is great reading when you have read all of the other guides to death.

I hope I haven't confused you. Please PM me if you have other questions, and if you can't PM me, I can Pm you so you can ask your questions.

Thank you! How much of a discount does AAA get you?? I'm definitely going to do a meal plan. It seems to save a lot of money. We'll be there for 8 days and 7 nights.

One way you might save is if Disney offers the free dining plan to the public again next year. We booked in June and received the free dining. For 2007 the last date to start your stay was Sept 22. That was our first day there. If you have some leeway and can consider the end of Sept if the offer is available you will save quite a bit especially if staying in a Value hotel. Our stay was a room in All Star Sports, 8 day park hoppers and free meals - under 595 pp. I thought it was a good deal. You can also look for codes on Disney's website as well as mousesavers.com. Have fun planning!!!

DisneyFan - wow...how did you do everything so cheap???!!!

The meal plan was free. We paid 82 + tax per night for the room and the cost of an 8 day park hopper. I don't remember the exact tax rate 12.5% or 13% for the room, but that was all we paid. The special at first was emailed to me in Apr for Disney Visa holders, then it was open to the general public a few weeks or so later. The free meals included 1 table service, 1 counter service and 1 snack per person per night of stay. It was Plenty of food. Next year they may or may not offer it. When we were there Disney offered the free dining for a return visit booked while you were there. I'm sure if they don't have enough bookings for next Sept, they will put it out there for all to enjoy. One thing that does change for next years dining plan is that no appetizer or tip will be included as it was for 2007. Also, with using the Disney Visa, no interest for 6 months!! and you receive Disney dollars. Any other questions, feel free to ask.

I'm not sure what kind of discounts will be offered in the future......Disney has NOT been having a hard time filling their rooms in fact the attendance at WDW for 2006 has been at an all time record breaking high. If this continues we may not see such great promotions as free dining.

I'd have to agree. Even though it's nice to think this free dining promotion could happen again, you shouldn't count on it.

When it comes to Disney codes/discounts, don't put all your eggs in one basket. You might be setting yourself up for disappointment.

The best way to snag deals is to be flexible with the time of year you'd be willing to travel, that way if a certain promotion comes out, you're ready to take advantage of it!

Good luck! :goodvibes

The Halloween decorations were up since mid Sept just to let you know. They start the Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party (MNSSHP if you see this) around then. We were there the last week of Sept and had basically perfect weather. We were lucky. It rained the week before and FL seems to be having rain again this week. It was high 80's though.

Disneyfan - I'm so glad you mentioned this. I too, am a Disney Visa cardholder and have utilized the free dining deal for the past 2 years. But I have never received ANY notification from either Disney or VISA when they first offer the deal to cardmembers only. I've even called to inquire how to receive such notices, but nobody could provide an answer. This April I diligently watched the Allears website for the announcement - and that's the only way I knew.
Do you remember who you received the email from? Disney or VISA? Is there a special mail-list I need to subscribe to?

And to the OP - the Disney Visa card is another good way to help pay for your vacation. You earn $1 Disney Reward Dollar for each $100 you charge and if you pay for your vacation with the card you get 6 months free financing.

Wow - thank you all for so much wonderful information!! I will have to look into getting that Disney Visa now, too! :cool1:

I don't remember if it came from Disney or Disney Visa, but my guess is Disney Visa. It was only for the Disney Visa holders for a few weeks, then the general public. I actually booked the trip when it was out there for everyone but used the Disney Visa to get points and no interest. I also for the few months before I had to make final pmt use the Disney Visa for insurance and cable bills and also referred 2 people to get 25 extra dollars. the person referred also received 25!! What a great deal for all. I used the 100 disney dollars to pay towards the final pmt too!! I don't remember subscribing except maybe when I opened the account they had my email. Disney has my email address. too.
