Ok, I'm new to this so bare with me ;)

I know DD7 will love this pin trading. I have a couple of etiquette questions for you that I couldn't find the answers to....

1. Is trading only done with CMs or can my daughter trade with another person in line for instance?

2 Do CMs approach you to trade if they see a lanyard and pins around your neck? Or only 'civilians' can approach CMs?

3. Can you decline a trade?

4. How does it work exactly? DD would say 'geez I like that pin' and the CM says 'OK I'd like your amethyst Minnie'. Can my DD decline and offer something else? amethyst minnie is her favorite... :)

5. Is it OK to wear your prized pins to the park or should those be left at the hotel?

You can trade with any quest who is willing to trade with you. It's a fun way to meet people and pass the time in line, etc. Of course, the person can always decline to trade.

2 Do CMs approach you to trade if they see a lanyard and pins around your neck? Or only 'civilians' can approach CMs?

Most of the time you will have to approach them and make an offer to trade, or just ask to look at their pins.

3. Can you decline a trade?

Of course! Just say "No, thank you."

4. How does it work exactly? DD would say 'geez I like that pin' and the CM says 'OK I'd like your amethyst Minnie'. Can my DD decline and offer something else? amethyst minnie is her favorite...

The CMs will make any trade your daughter wants. The only time they can turn down a trade is if they already have one of those pins on their lanyard. So, if your daughter sees a pin on a CM lanyard that she wants, she can offer any pin she has and the CM will trade with her - as long as the CM doesn't already have the pin she is offering. So, she would say something like, "I would like to trade my Nemo pin here for your Donald Duck pin", and the CM will have to make the trade - provided they aren't already wearing the Nemo pin your daughter is offering.

5. Is it OK to wear your prized pins to the park or should those be left at the hotel?

Sure, it's ok. But, if it is a really cool or very much loved pin, I would leave it in the room. They tend to fall off and get lost really easily.

Pin trading is lots of fun! Have a good time!!

I'm not sure, but if you really want one before you get there, ebay is a good place to look for lanyards and pins.

Disney Stores no longer carry pins or lanyards -- but you can find them on disneystore.com the catalog and sometimes Disney Deals on ebay (Disney's discount ebay store). Ebay, cheappins.com dizpins.com (click on the link at the top for the boards) and the pin trading board here at the dis are also good places to find lanyards and some starter pins to take with you.

Is there a site to find out more info on the pins? I saw a trip report that described "lanyard pins" and "CM pins". How do I find out what they are?

If you have a Hot Topic (an alternative clothing store) in your area, they carry tinkerbelle, cheshire cat, and nightmare before christmas lanyards for around $6. WWW.Hottopic.com is their website and they are there as well. I got my husband a Jack Skelington for our trip and he can't wait to wear it. Good look~KPmom

*** FYI *** Disney Pin Trading 101

I have pins, now what?
First a little background information....
The people that visit Walt Disney World are called guests. The people that work at Disney are called Cast Members. Cast Members often times wear lanyards much like the ones that you have been given. Some Cast Members wear green lanyards. The green lanyards mean that only kids 12 years old or younger can make pin trades with them. Some Cast Members wear black lanyards and they will pin trade with anyone of any age.

So, what is Disney pin trading?
It's a fun hobby that will allow you to make trades with Cast Members and other guests at Walt Disney World for pins that you like. Different pins are worth more money than others. Some of the pins on your lanyard are going to be more valuable than others. The value of the pin is not important when you trade with Cast Members. What matters is if you like the pin!

Simple things to remember while pin trading....
First thing to remember is to be polite. Introduce yourself! "Please", "May I", and "Thank You", are all words that should be used in the process of a trade. It's not polite to touch someone's lanyard or their pins without asking first. Cast Members can only make two trades with each guest. Cast Members will only trade a pin that you want for a pin that they do not already have on their lanyard. You may not buy pins off of a Cast Member's lanyard.

Are there any special places to pin trade at Disney?
Yes, pin trading station locations are marked with a PT on the maps.
Magic Kingdom: Exposition Hall
Disney Studios: Under the Sorcerer's Hat
Animal Kingdom: Island Merchantile
EPCOT: Pin Central
Downtown Disney: World of Disney - They keep a special kids only book of pins here!
The Contemporary Resort also has a pin trading station.

What kind of pin can be traded at Disney?
Ideally, the pins should be metal and in good condition. They all should have the word Disney on the back. Usually the pins are from Disney characters, events, or of park icons.

So, how would I go about trading a pin with a Cast Member?
Imagine you are at the Magic Kingdom. Cinderella's Castle is just up ahead and your family stops to get their bearings. You are wearing your lanyard and are ready to trade. A Cast Member wearing a lanyard with pins is walking by and you want to see her pins.

You: "Excuse me, may I see your lanyard please? My name is Mickey."
CM: "Sure Mickey, nice to meet you!" And she then walks over and pulls her lanyard out so that you can get a better look. You see a Tigger pin that you really want.
You: "Would you please trade that Tigger pin with me?" And you begin to remove the 2000 logo pin that you want to use as a trader since she doesn't have one on her lanyard yet. You replace the back onto the pin you are trading away. You then hand it to her.
CM: "Sure!" She removes her Tigger pin. "There ya' go! I hope you enjoy it." She hands you the Tigger pin.
You: "Thank you for the trade!"
CM: "You're welcome Mickey."

If the Cast Member had nothing on her lanyard that you liked, you should at least say "Thanks for letting me look, but I didn't see anything that I liked." The Cast Members understand that you might not see anything that you want to make a trade for, but they appreciate it when you are polite about it.

Ok, that was easy enough. How do I trade with other guests?
With a guest to guest trade, it gets a little trickier. Other guests, especially the adults, are most likely really into pin trading. Sometimes they are more than willing to make a trade and sometimes, you just don't have what they are looking for. It's still important to be polite. Just remember that with a Cast Member trading will always be easier.

What if someone asks to trade with me?
Great! Take a look at their lanyard while they look at yours. If you don't see something you like, but they do, you can say "No, thank you!" Don't let ANYONE pressure you into trading when you don't want to. Pin trading should be fun. If you ever have a question about a trade, ask a Cast Member or other adult to help.

Anything else?
Yes, pin trading can be addictive. You can meet lots of nice Cast Members and Pin Pals while trading. Just remember to be polite and have fun! Enjoy!

www.pinpics.com -- a database of over 25,000 Disney pins. You can search by category, park, limited edition, etc. There is an enormous amount of data here, so be prepared! :)

www.odpt.com -- The official Disney pintrading website. Here you will find information about pin events and new pins scheduled to be released at the parks.

Caution about trading with other guests: This may not be the best idea for a child, nor for someone who is unfamiliar with the value of their pins. Sadly, there are "guests" who would take advantage of this situation. Please supervise all of your child's trading, and be especially careful with non-CM trades.

Not sure if this has been mentioned -- At WDW some CM have green lanyards that are only for trading with kids. They deliberately seed these lanyards with some current popular rack pins, especially those that appeal to kids like princesses, Monsters Inc, Nemo, etc. I have also found that CMs that wear the green lanyards tend to be more patient with the kids, and talk to them on their level about the pins. :earsgirl:

Oh, I just found you all today but thought I'd give my experience! Just returned from WDW & DCL. Should have done my homework before I went, didn't realize DD (and mom!) would go pin trading crazy! It was SO much fun, even though we knew nothing, but we learned as we went.

About wearing your favorites, my neice lost about 12 pins during our trip. Not really sure why that kept happening but my DD got wise and removed her favorites and kept them in the room (Pop Century)

The CM's were SO kind to my DD, especially at the hotel. And the managers were even better! One CM, left her post in the arcade and took us all around to different CM's in the food court & gift shop to show us what to look for (lanyard pins, etc) A few went to great lengths to locate a pin she was wanting (we got into the Wild about Safety set)

Have so much fun!

More answers:

Lanyard pins ---- a pin that can not be purchased. They are only found on CM lanyards, so the only way to get it is to trade for it.
If you want to see what the current lanyard pins are---go to www.dizpins.com/pinventory/wdw_lanyard_2003.html

CM pins - Just as tough. Only sold to CMs at the Company D store backstage. So you have to know a CM and unlike the lanyard pins since this actually is owned by the CM have to trade for a pin they want. They can refuse this trade. They also can not do it while "on stage" (i.e. working)

BTW, do you know if I can buy a lanyard at the Disney Store before our trip?

Do you still need a lanyard? If so, email me and I will send you one. I happen to have a few laying around.

There is a product on the market called PinSavers that will attach to the back of a pin using a really tiny allen wrench (included). It basically is a vise grip for pins. Makes it painful to take pins off if you wanted to trade but it will eliminate you losing pins. Since I began using PinSavers, I have not lost any pins. I use them for special pins that are attached to my backpack.
