I woke up this morning to the chirps of a Cardinal outside my window. I just laid there for a while and listened~ I love their song! I assume it was a Cardinal- we also have a Mockingbird in close proximity and it could have been him- although he tends to vary (as they do!) He's really fun to hear singing too!

What are your favorites?

Fluff rocks! :cloud9:

I would have to say that the birds I always looked forward to hearing were our resident cardinals. Since we've moved I do definitely miss their song!

Enjoy them all, but I guess I love the ones I hear the most. Robins, and chickadees...which are 'the sound of summer' to me. :)

I couldn't tell you the difference between any of them. They're all just "birds" to me, but I do enjoy hearing them sing their little tunes.:goodvibes

As North American songbirds go, it would probably be red-winged blackbirds. However, I used to work in a research lab with a number of African and Asian finches that I was fairly fond of and could distinguish by their calls, but no one here is likely to have ever heard of them.

For looks, I love the black and white warbler. For sound I like the Greater Kiskadee. It's not a songbird, but it's the first bird whose sound I could easily recognize. I also love the sound of the Double-crested cormorant. It always sounds like a bunch of adolescent boys having a burping contest! It makes me smile.

We have a nesting box in the peak of our garage- my dh made it one year when some robins were trying to put a nest on our outside light up there- earlier this spring a pair of mourning doves built a nest in it and laid 2 eggs. They never hatched- and the birds moved on. After it was clear the birds weren't coming back my husband took the "bad" eggs out and within a couple of weeks the birds were back and they laid 2 more eggs! This time they hatched and when ds and I were leaving this morning we saw the parents "teaching" the babies to fly. It was really exciting for us. Now the nest is empty again. I wonder if anyone else will move in this year....
