I have a total budget buster full of poop, literally! My septic tank backed up... I had to have it pumped, to the tune of $610, and ON TOP OF THAT...had to have the septic company come back tomorrow to fix the drain pipe so it will *hopefully* work again for 600 more dollars.... Total bummer:headache::mad::headache::scared1:

You need to regularly pump your septic tank. We do our every 3 -5 years and it is less than $200.

Once solids get out of the tank you may be forced to replace the field. I hope the clogged pipe is between the house and the tank and nothing got out the other side. If the company suspects it did then they are required to report it.

We just had our leech field replaced last year. Luckily before we had major problems.

I have six people (all boys but for me) in my home, we get ours pumped every other year. My neighbor has three daughters, our septic lady told her to pump every year. It seems women are harder on the system than men.

I would call around on the pumping though. I paid $400 once, then my neighbor told us about the woman who now services ours. She has a larger tank and charges less ($150). When we lived in Michigan, it was that way. We called out of county and found cheaper.

I hope that it is just a clogged pipe and not the leech field.

it.

We do ours every 3 years. It costs about $275 when we do it. I figure that it is money well spent to prevent problems. I always make sure that I am not going to be home on the day they pump it out. The first time, I didn't know any better, and when they came to do it (a hot day in August), all my windows were open  I won't be doing THAT again!

To the OP  I hope that the problem isn't a major one!

I feel your pain OP.
HVAC broke and need to install a whole new unit to the tune of 6K. Leak around pipe exiting house with all the rain 1K. Atrium door replacement, also leaking...3K. Is this what the emergency fund is for?

p.s. just had septic pumped for 190$. We do it religiously every 2 years. Growing up I experienced the septic backing up in the house! Not fun probably my worst nightmare.

The pumping company should have been able to tell you whether the septic tank was due for pumping, overdue for pumping, or way overdue for pumping. In the latter case there is a good chance that grease (scum) and solids got into the leach field beyond the tank and you may have additional backup problems.

Note that a septic tank is normally about 85% full (i.e. when working correctly) This usually means a water level about a foot below the brim or a little less. Then liquid goes to the leach field as new liquid comes in from the house on a gallon for gallon basis.

If you dig up the septic tank lid yourself, the pumping company will usually charge you less.

ours had to be pumped in feb of this year. $175. the man told me to flush one packet of yeast each month to help keep the good bacteria active. he also said to have it pumped at least every 5 years. we've lived here 25 years and had never had it done. we were lucky that our fields and lines were not messed up.

Im sorry you had to go though that. We try to prepare on our side by setting aside some funds for the "unexpected". Then we auto deposit there every 15 days.

That happened to my sister one Thanksgiving. On Thanksgiving day, the septic tank backed up and the guy would only come out as long as he didn't have to dig. So we were all out there with shovels digging until we uncovered the tank. Then he pumped it out. Lots of fun!!!---NOT!
