I have a new Laptop..well 3 months new. It works great ..but when I use it in my Family Room it keeps losing it's wireless connection? I can be sitting beside my DD as she types away happily on hers still connected-but mine keeps cutting in and out. Not all the time...but on and off on a regular basis. I have tried calling Toshiba-but am fed up with the constant busy busy signal.:confused3

Sounds like spot interference, probably caused by something in that room (so nothing Toshiba could do about it over the telephone, anyway). That can happen even if it doesn't seem to affect another laptop. (Newer wireless apparatus is both potentially less robust due to cost-reduction and potentially more sensitive due to supporting new technology (IEEE 802.11n).

What you could do is start removing other electronic devices from the room and see which one is causing the problem. However, keep in mind that it could be something you cannot get to (like the motor in a ceiling fan or HVAC diverter). It could even be the television (that's actually very likely).

I've always wondered if lead paint in older homes could cause signal blockage, especially if the router is at one end of the house and the laptop is at the other end. We sometimes get spotty reception when this is the case. I've been told it shouldn't, I've been told it might. Seems to me the latter would be more likely, but any number of things could cause interference besides that.

Lead paint would need to be pretty darned thick to block the frequency that wireless LAN signals operate at, unless I'm mistaken. :)

Hmmm....only thing (s) in the room are a TV and a ceiling fan that is seldom ever on. And a plug-in phone too. My DD's Laptop is only a few months older and an HP but it makes sense..I guess I should troubleshoot and try it elsewhere. Odd that I can be in there sometimes and it's fine and others it is on and off for hours.:confused3

Thanks all for the help!!:thumbsup2

I assumed that you had tried the laptop somewhere else, and it only didn't work right there in that room. If not, then surely try that first. If you can't get reliable connection regardless of where you are, then you really should contact Toshiba as that would be possibly a hardware issue. And you really want to move quickly. The longer it goes, the less likely that it will still be under warranty.

I don't think I have tried it anywhere else as I have a Desktop that is in the kitchen 10 feet away. I did take it to Florida last month and it was fine? In a Hotel room..

Yeah, okay, then it should work in your home. I'm back to suspecting something in your room putting out interference that affects your wireless adapter, specifically.

Your thread really has me thinking...my father has a Toshiba laptop (probably 6 months old) and he complains constantly about losing his WiFi connection. FTR, he's a computer techie and pretty proficient with this stuff, so I'm inclined to believe he knows what he's doing (or not doing, LOL). They have two other laptops in their home (one is brand new) and neither have that problem on their network.

I'm even more intrigued now to read that you too have a Toshiba with the same exact problem...
