Tortilla Joe's - Is it really that bad?

We had dinner at Tortilla Joe's in Downtown Disney last Wed and it was the most horrible Mexican food we have ever eaten. We love Mexican and it doesn't take much to please us, but every single dish (steak tacos, Ceviche, kids meal) we ordered was simply uneatable. The only good thing was our waiter Fred (friendly and attentive). The chips and margaritas were acceptable.

Wondering if it was just an off night or are they really that bad?

It's extremely Americanized Mexican food. In that regard we have found it to be OK (fresh ingredients and good service) but in no way authentic.
But just about any of our local places are better.
The Margarita's are pretty good there though!

To be honest, our last trip there I thought our food was horrible also. We usually eat there once a trip.

Born and raised in CA, and I hated their food. Haven't been back since 2009? I had shrimp something (fajitas?) and they were so incredibly bland.
I thought it was just me, since so many people seem to love this place.

Hmmm... I actually like it. I usually get their tableside guacamole and the enchilada suizas. For Americanized Mexican food I think it's tasty. For real Mexican food I either make it at home or go to a local (to my home) place.

I ate there once in 2011 and didn't feel the best afterwards. Rancho del Zocalo has better "Mexican" food, but that isn't saying much, IMO.

We haven't been for a few years but we used to really like it. We're from SoCal so we do know good authentic Mexican. Theirs is certainly not authentic, but we enjoyed it. Hope it's not going downhill.

I liked the walk up window when it first opened. The tacos were really good and inexpensive. Loved the shredded chicken. The food was never authentic though.

I don't know if they changed the food when they remodeled but it's not good anymore.

The sit down restaurant was always kinda meh.

We love TJ's! They have a shrimp salad that I love and my niece loves their flautas! Their guac is good too! We eat there almost every trip and have always enjoyed our food!

I remember 3 years ago sitting there with my young adult kids eating the tableside guacamole and thinking to myself "Wow, this is the best guacamole I have ever had". Then one of my kids spoke up and said exactly that. And everyone agreed.

IMO their margaritas are decent/above average. I like their flautas. That TJ's is horrible? Never once for us.

:wizard:

It was really bad WAY back when it first opened and for several years after that. We avoided it for a long time.

Went last summer and honestly, it was amazing! I always get chicken fajitas (not super authentic, but it's my barometer on "good" Mexican-American restaurants). The fajitas were outstanding, super flavorful, fresh, and a huge portion. Loved the chips and salsa as well.

Sorry to hear you didn't like it.

I did not enjoy it when we went three years ago. I don't see us returning.

It's so funny how everyone's taste is so different! But then that's why some of these places stay open!

We will never set foot in Naples ever again after a horrible food and service experience! But on here people rave about it!

Interesting to see the different opinions. We eat out a couple times per week and it has been years since we had such a bad experience with the food. (service was good).
I mean everything was bad...the meat, the rice, the beans... lol. We looked at each other and couldn't believe it! lol Kids only had one bite.
We ended up getting caramel apples and chocolate marshmallows nearby to hide the bad taste.

This is all very interesting to me. We are planning on eating at Tortilla Jo's during our trip in June, we have never been before. The menu looks really good (especially the table side guacamole). This is one of the restaurants that I am really looking forward to trying (Naples being another one), even though we live in a suburb of Chicago, I don't really have any true authentic Mexican restaurants near me to compare it to. To be honest, my DH and I really like the Mexican restaurant in the Mexican pavilion in Epcot and that gets some bad reviews too, maybe since we like that restaurant (one of our favorites), we will enjoy Tortilla Jo's...maybe...hopefully :goodvibes.

Different people have different tastes, so that's something to remember.

A lot of people think Pizza Port is garbage and I don't think DH and I have missed eating there once in every trip we've made.

i haven't eaten there recently, but we've always liked it. we've only eaten at the taqueria tho, not the restaurant.
