Is Air Canada the only way to go? Right now it's on sale for $900+. Will the fares go lower?

Is there a cheaper avenue via Buffalo?

I would think you could also go BUF to LAX and find a flight out of LAX...

OP, I don't know about alternate routes, but assuming you are flying economy, you may want to look at a route that lets you change planes halfway--Vancouver/Seattle/San Diego? I remember thinking that I might not ever get the kinks out of my legs after sitting on that long flight from Toronto to Honolulu, packed in like sardines in economy class.

I just priced out Ottawa -> Vancouver -> Honolulu yesterday on Westjet for about $980 taxes in for October.

There's lots of other options for you if you do a connection, but AC is the only direct that I know of. No idea about fares but I've seen them as low as about $800 in past. Westjet had Hawaii as it's BlueTag Thursday special a while ago.

There are a number of airlines besides Air Canada that fly Toronto to Honolulu that involve a connection that are less expensive.

We flew to Maui last year on points so I'm not sure about cost but we connected in LA. We needed to be there for a few days which is why we chose that route but it might be worth pricing out connecting there as well since there are so many different airlines that fly from California to Hawaii including Hawaiin Air. Try using Expedia or something like that and it will give you different combinations of flights you can use. We connected both ways and i'm pretty sure I couldn't do a direct flight...it's a looong way and it was nice to break it up.

We try to get to Hawaii every 2nd year or so and the cheapest I have paid is 550/USD/per person and that was out of Buffalo. www.travelocity.ca is showing American Airlines having seats out of BUF to HNL in July for $773.58. This is on the high side but it is also Honeymoon season and tends to be pricey. April-May and Sept-Oct are usually the least expensive times to go. I have also done the stopping in California idea and it is great but you are going to pay for your checked luggage twice and with some airlines charging 30+ bucks a bag one way it can really add up with a family of four. Just something to consider...
